the Siemens instabus system, and
numerous ways it aids in providing
convenience and savings in
commercial buildings as compared
to the conventional wiring system.

Conventional systems are limiting and complex

Conventional electrical installations in large utility buildings
are often complex, confusing and full of limitations. Adding
to the headache is the amount of retrofitting works required
by new tenants who often call for major rewiring works to
suit their individual requirements.

But the ever-ready Siemens instabus system is able to link
all those confusing independent lines together to give you
methodical control. This advance system will also grow with
the building, so modification is easy without having to knock
down walls. Thus a substantial amount of savings is achieved
in retrofitting works.

What is instabus?
instabus is a system which integrates the different aspects
of building devices: it integrates control and monitoring for
lighting, temperature, curtains/shutters, home appliances,
security via a single common cable. This single cable runs
from control devices to control devices and is powered by
Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV).

Offices - Meeting/Board Room
In the corporate world of high-powered
negotiations and multi-million dollar
presentations, a well-coordinated and sleek
presentation will impress your audience.
Just one touch on the Infrared Handheld
Remote Control (page 3-35), you can switch
seamlessly between different medium and
without awkward interludes. These scenes may
be activated by any user, any occupant, using
the IR Handheld Remote. The pre-setting of the
scenes are selected and programmed by the
owner with the Push Buttons or Handheld
Remote Control. There is no need of extra
software or phone calls to the contractor to
change the scenes to the owner’s liking.

Once the presentation is over, simply pull back
those room partitions and you will have your
individual meeting room back in the original
configuration. The built-in Room Contact will
detect the retracted partition, allowing each
task group to control lights in their section from
push buttons positioned next to the entrance.
Room Partitioning (page 3-42)
1. Two separate rooms individually controlled
by push buttons and wireless remote
transmitters are connected with a door.
2. Start retracting partitions so as to merge two
rooms into one.
3. Now the board room is almost ready for use.
4. The two individually controlled parts
automatically merge to one large room with
common control for individual lights, scene
presetting and even wireless remote control.

Intelligent office lighting

Offices - Working Area
Occasions do arise when the general work area
requires major re-layout work. This means
dealing with another round of dusty wall-hacking
and huge tangles of cables and wires, if it is on
conventional wiring system. But with Siemens
instabus, you simply need to add on the new
fittings and reprogram the system in a costeffective and hassle-free manner.
Office facilities will stay in operating mode
through the night if they are not switched off
at the end of the work day. So it makes perfect
sense to program the system to supply power
to copier machines and printers only during
office hours. This will achieve tremendous
energy savings. Timed Switching (page 2-17)
Alternatively, a time margin may be given such
that lights and devices are switched on one
hour before and after office hours.

Impressive presentations with instabus designer switches

Large utility buildings consume huge amount
of energy power because all lights in the working
area are switched on fully throughout the day.
But substantial energy savings can be observed
with the bus technology, as the Daylight

Control (page 3-37) will integrate the daylight
and artificial light in a single system.
So depending on the exterior weather, the
artificial lights nearest to the windows will
automatically dim to supply sufficient lighting
to workers.

Retail Area - Selling Floor
Constituting the largest area space and housing
all display items in a retail outlet, the variable
cost for electricity is by far one of the most
substantial. In addition to that problem is the
non-flexibility of control for the various light
groups. But with the ever-ready Siemens
instabus , lights that are not used for the displays
may be dimmed down or switched off.
The new light setting may be achieved without
any complication of rewiring to accommodate
the new theme of display of items. Simply
adjust the lights to the brightness level preferred
(on, off or dim), save the settings into memory
and recall the setting whenever you need it.

General Area - Entrance Hall
This is the first area visitors will step into in any
building. Impressions are formed immediately
as a result of the unusual building materials and
light scenes being achieved. The receptionist
is able to recall different preset light groups at
the touch of a fingertip. With an elegant looking
interior, unsightly combinations of conventional
switches and dimmers are replaced by designer

General Area - Lift & Staircase Landing
Lights in this area are often left running
throughout the entire day. But, there will be no
more unnecessary wastage in terms of energy
and cost with Siemens instabus. You now have
the choice of ensuring that lights are dimmed
or turned off completely at a preset time after

The system is also able to detect unauthorized
presence and have strategic lights turned on.

Switch on the microwave oven, the coffee
machine and the water heater before you reach
home? At just the press of a button on the mobile
phone, many things can be accomplished
remotely.
The instabus can also monitor home appliances
like the freezer. The owner will be informed about
its malfunction before the food inside is damaged.

Fire detectors provide additional safety where a

gas stove is used for cooking. In the case of fire,
you can have the Siemens instabus giving you
and the fire department a call, have the front yard
lamp blinking so that the fire brigade has no
problem locating your house. The instabus can
also switch off the gas valve for you to avoid a
more hazardous situation.

Utility Area - Bathrooms
On the verge of leaving the office for the home,
you can command the heater to warm up the

Lecture/Conventional Halls
The first batch of students and lecturer using
the theatre hall will often find it stuffy and hot.
But with the intelligent Siemens instabus , the
air-con will be switched on automatically at a
preset time and thus cooling the lecture theatre
just before the first lesson of the day.
Activate the desired lighting just before the start
of a lecture to suit the particular class.
The lecturer is also able to switch forth between
projectors and video players at the touch of a
button, without having to distract the class by

Rehabilitation Wards

lights to welcome visitors, dim down lights and
draw the curtains for recuperation. All these
