HOW DO YOU IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH WITHOUT
SPENDING LOTS OF MONEY
Good….. Jury!

My name is Pham Gia Thinh, I come from Class Travel administration K31.
Today, I feel very happy to be presented here, and take part in an english contest.
That contest name is English Olympic. The name of the topic I will talk about is
“How do you improve your english without spending lot of money”.
Now, I feel so nervous, but I think in my mind that “if I try more, everything will
be better”.
We also know that English is considered the international language, nowaday. It
plays an important and neccesary not only for our life but also for our job in the
future.
But, learning english is a very difficult problem, it’s not easy. We need study hard
and laboriously. Therefore, learning english needs carefull investments. But, many
people don’t have a good condition to learn english well. Me too. I like learning
english, but I don’t have good condition, so I always find many ways to study
english without spending lots of money.
There are many ways to learn and improve knowledge of English, i think it is very
effective.
• Making a habit: I do my english homework everyday, as well as learning new
words and doing 10 minutes or more listening practice every day. I think this will
make me get a habit of learning english.
• Watching TV in other languages can also be enjoyable, such as watch English
language films with English subtitles.

• Learning vocabulary effectively. A way to learn new words is that I always try
to find out the words to describe everything around me. For example: In other to
learn body vocabulary, I write down all words which refer to body (head, eyes,
ears, nose, mouth, hand, foot, ect)
• Get amongst people who only speak English: Find friends to study and speak
each other. Learning English together can be very encouraging.
• Listen to English music. Even listening to music while doing something else
can help a little for things like getting used to the natural rhythm and tone of

English speech, although the more time and attention you give to a song the more
you will learn from listening to it again in the future.
• Learning the lyrics and singing along. This can help you learn vocabulary and
work on your accent.
• Listen and repeat: I also often listen to tapes and repeat after them, try to
imitate them.
• Read the lyrics to a song. Once you have read and understood the lyrics, if you
then listen and read at the same time, this can be a good way of understanding how
sounds change in fast, natural, informal speech.

. Sing karaoke in English. If you want to get a understanding and memorising a
song, obviously, you have to sing it more and more. Learning english by singing
English song is also a best way!
• Read English language magazines, newspapers. Like books, if you can read
two versions of the same magazine (the newspaper in my language and in English,
for example), that could make understanding it much easier.
• Use a dictionary while you are watching a movie. Films often have the same
words many times, so if you look up important words the first or second time you

hear them, you should have learnt them by the end of the film. It is easier to use a
dictionary if you watch with English subtitles.

. Talking with the foreigners. Besides, I think my everyday conversations with
the foreigners I meet in the street will enable me to accquire a proper accent.
• Teach your friends or someone some English. Teaching someone lower level
than you the English you already know is a great way of permanently fixing that
knowledge in your own brain.
• Spend your time on things that interest you. If you like cooking then buy an
English cookbook or find recipes on the net and practise following the recipes.
You'll soon learn the recipes as well as english grammar and vocabulary!
My most important piece of advice is: "Do anything. If you don't do anything, you
won't get anything. Make it your hobby, not a chore, but above all have fun!" Just
remember, it doesn't matter how well you think you know the English language,
there is always something new to learn.
In short, if you want to study well English, you have to try your best and set
yourself achievable goals. And if you want to study English better
without spending lots of money, you have to take advantage of all
opportunities, time, places, ect, to stdudy it. Actually, I hope what I
gave above will help you a little bit. Thank you so much for your

English Olympic Contest
attention. And I would like to give the greatest wishes to all here!
Thank you again and have a good day!
