III. Questions

I. Privacy

Privacy is very
important to British

For British, it is impolite to ask people
questions:

Money
Family
Age
Sex life
“Personal” questions

Example:
John : Hello! I am John.
Nana: Hi! I am Nana.
John : How old are you?
Nana: 20. And you?
John : 21. Are you
married?
Nana: I’m single.
John : What do you do?
How much money you earn

for a month?
Nana: I’m a teacher.

In the first time you meet
someone in Britain, you
should greet by :
 Peter: How do you
do?
 Mary: How do you
do?

British have law of privacy to
protect people:

Everyone has the right to respect for his
private and family life, his home, and
correspondence.

 Private life
 respect for private and confidential information
 respect for individual sexuality
 respect for privacy when one has a reasonable
expectation of privacy
 the right to control the dissemination of information
about one’s private life, including photographs taken
covertly.

 Respect for the home: a right not to have one’s
home life interfered with.
 Respect for correspondence: the right to
uninterrupted and uncensored communication with
others.

II. Sex
 Effects of sex to private life
 British’s views of sex

 Effects of sex to
private life

• Keeping things private is very essential to
British, especially sex life.
• British public life has a reputation for demanding
puritanical standards of behavior.

• Politicians’ sexual activity has negative
influences to their career.

Example:
• Former US President Bin Clinton with his
interns – Monica Lewinsky

• In some cases, It
can bring positive
consequences for
the politician.

 British’s views of sex

• Example:

British have a positive and
open attitude to sex

• Example:
The Gay Man’s Guide’s videos

Not “Pornographic”
But “Educational”

They still considered sex as a
private matter.

For example:

• The Britain’s
government concerned
about sex education in
school but a research
in early 1990s showed
that nearly half of the
schools in the country
have little or no sex
education.

• Even though prostitution and solicitation
are illegal, British still have tolerate and
embarrassed attitude to them.

Example:
• It is illegal to buy sex
from a person
younger than 18,
although the age of
consent for noncommercial sex is 16
throughout the United
Kingdom.

• Laws are not always
strictly enforced, and
many brothels in
cities such as
Manchester and

London operate under
the name "Massage
parlours", with police
forces often turning a
blind eye to such
establishments.

 Questions:
• What are British’s attitude to sex?
• Should or should not have subject about sex
at schools in Viet Nam? Why or why not?

Thank you for your listening!
