An air pollutant is defined as a compound added directly or indirectly by humans to the atmosphere in
such quantities as to affect humans, animals, vegetation, or materials adversely. Air pollution requires a very
flexible definition that permits continuous change. When the first air pollution laws were established in
England in the fourteenth century, air pollutants were limited to compounds that could be seen or smelled - a
far cry from the extensive list of harmful substances known today. As technology has developed and
knowledge of the health aspects of various chemicals has increased, the list of air pollutants has lengthened. In
the future, even water vapor might be considered an air pollutant under certain conditions.
Many of the more important air pollutants, such as sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen
oxides, are found in nature. As the Earth developed, the concentration of these pollutants was altered by
various chemical reactions; they became components in biogeochemical cycles. These serve as an air
purification scheme by allowing the compounds to move from the air to the water or soil. On a global basis,
nature's output of these compounds dwarfs that resulting from human activities.
However, human production usually occurs in a localized area, such as a city. In such a region, human
output may be dominant and may temporarily overload the natural purification scheme of the cycles. The
result is an increased concentration of noxious chemicals in the air. The concentrations at which the adverse
effects appear will be greater than the concentrations that the pollutants would have in the absence of human
activities. The actual concentration need not be large for a substance to be a pollutant; in fact, the numerical
value tells us little until we know how much of an increase this represents over the concentration that would
occur naturally in the area. For example, sulfur dioxide has detectable health effects at 0.08 parts per million
(ppm), which is about 400 times its natural level. Carbon monoxide, however, has a natural level of 0.1 ppm
and is not usually a pollutant until its level reaches about 15 ppm.
Question 46: What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. The economic impact of air pollution.

cities
Question 49: The word "These" in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to_.
A. the various chemical reactions
B. the pollutants from the developing Earth
C. the compounds moved to the water or soil D. the components in biogeochemical cycles

air pollution?
A. They function as part of a purification process.
B. They occur in greater quantities than other
pollutants.
C. They are less harmful to living beings than other pollutants. D. They have existed since the Earth

D. it can be calculated quickly
C. the natural level is also known

Question 54: The word "detectable" in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to_____.
A. beneficial
B. special
C. measurable
D. separable
Question 55: Which of the following is best supported by the passage?
A. To effectively control pollution, local government should regularly review their air pollution laws.

I grew up in a small town and then moved to a big city, so I have experienced the good and bad sides
of both. I never thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. After ten years of living in one, I
can't imagine ever living in a small town again.
Small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transportation. In a small town, you
have to own a car to ensure a comfortable living. You can't get around without one because there isn't any
kind of public transportation. Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensive parking, but there you
have a choice of taking public transportation. It's not free, but it's often cheaper than driving when you
consider gas and time. Especially if you don't have a car, you're better off in the city.
I love the excitement of big cities. Small towns have a slow pace. Large cities mean you have to adapt
to a variety of situations, like finding a new route to work or trying a new restaurant. I enjoy that challenge
very much. Another pan of the excitement of city living is the variety of cultural activities available. There is a
wide assortment of theatre, music and dance performances available in big cities. These things are rare in
small ones.
The final thing I like about large cities is the diversity of the people. The United States is made up of
people of different races, religions, abilities, and interests. However, you seldom find such a variety of people
in a smaller town. I think that living in an area where everyone was just like me would quickly become boring.
Of course, security is a concern, and that's one area where small towns are superior to big cities. Still,
I would rather be a bit more cautious and live in a large city than to feel secure but bored.

The universal symbol of the Internet era communications, the @ sign used in e-mail addresses to

He says the sign represents an amphora (cái vò 2 quai), a measure of (39)_ capacity _ based on the

The professor (40)_ unearthed (không ti p t)_ toe ancient symbol in the course of research for a
visual history of the 20th century, to be published by the Treccani Encyclopedia. The first (41) known _
instance of its use, he says, occurred in a letter written by a Florentine merchant on May 4, 1536. He says the

Question 45: A. on

C. with
D. by
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
A rather surprising geographical feature of Antarctica is that a huge freshwater lake, one of the world's
largest and deepest, lies hidden there under four kilometers of ice. Now known as Lake Vostok, this huge
body of water is located under the ice block that comprises Antarctica. The lake is able to exist in its unfrozen
state beneath this block of ice because its waters are warmed by geothermal heat from the earth's core. The
thick glacier above Lake Vostok actually insulates(isolate) it from the frigid temperatures on the surface.
(l nh giá)
The lake was first discovered in the 1970s while a research team was conducting an aerial survey of
the area. Radio waves from the survey equipment penetrated(thâm nh p) the ice and revealed a body of water
of indeterminate (intermiinate = vô h n)size. It was not until much more recently that data collected by
satellite made scientists aware of the tremendous size of the lake; the satellite-borne radar detected an
extremely flat region where the ice remains level because it is floating on the water of the lake.
The discovery of such a huge freshwater lake trapped under Antarctica is of interest to the scientific
community because of the potential that the lake contains ancient microbes(vi trùng)that have survived for
thousands upon thousands of years, unaffected by factors such as nuclear fallout and elevated ultraviolet light
that have affected organisms in more exposed areas. The downside(m t x u) of the discovery, however, lies in
the difficulty of conducting research on the lake in such a harsh climate and in the problems associated with
obtaining uncontaminated samples from the lake without actually exposing the lake to contamination.
Scientists are looking for possible ways to accomplish this.

Question 46: The word "hidden" in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to

answer to each of the questions from.
Perhaps the most striking quality of satiric (satirical= châm bi m, trào phúng) literature is its freshness
and its originality of perspective (ph i c nh, th c ti n). Satire itself, however, rarely offers original ideas.
Instead, it presents the familiar in a new form. Satirists do not offer the world new philosophies (tri t lí). What
they do is look at familiar conditions from a perspective that makes these conditions seem foolish, harmful, or
affected. Satire jars (kêu lên, gây ch n ng) us out of complacence (s t mãn) into a pleasantly shocked
realization that many of the values we unquestioningly accept are false.
Don Quixote ( ông-Ki-S t) makes chivalry (tt th ng võ, hi p s ) seem absurd (vô lí); Brave New
World ridicules the pretensions (kì v ng) of science; A Modest Proposal dramatizes starvation ( ói) by
advocating cannibalism (t c n th t ng i). None of these ideas is original. Chivalry was suspect before
Cervantes, humanists objected to the claims of pure science before Aldous Huxley, and people were aware of
famine before Swift.
It was not the originality of the idea that made these satires popular. It was the manner of expression,
the satiric method, that made them interesting and entertaining. Satires are read because they are aesthetically
(th m m ) satisfying works of art, not because they are morally wholesome (lành tính, vô h i) or ethically
instructive. They are stimulating and refreshing because with commonsense briskness (phát t, nhanh) they
brush away illusions and secondhand opinions. With spontaneous irreverence (b t kính), satire rearranges
perspectives, scrambles (bò, tr n) familiar objects into incongruous (không h p) juxtaposition ( t li n k ),
and speaks in a personal idiom instead of abstract platitude (t m th ng, vô v ).

Satire exists because there is need for it. It has lived because readers appreciate a refreshing stimulus,
an irreverent(b t kính) reminder that they live in a world of platitudinous(t m th ng, vô v ) thinking, cheap
moralizing, and foolish philosophy. Satire serves to prod people into an awareness of truth, though rarely to
any action on behalf of truth. Satire tends to remind people that much of what they see, hear, and read in

II. Topic: What would you like to change about your hometown?
If I could change one important thing about my hometown, it would be air pollution problem, and I
will give the following reasons to explain why I want to solve the problem.
The first and most important reason is that I hope that my hometown can become a beautiful city. As
an old industrial city, my hometown has made a great deal of contribution for the country’s economic
development. At a result, the natural environment of the city has been badly damaged. The forest has
disappeared; the mountains have become bald, and the most awful thing is that the air quality becomes worse

and worse. People seldom see the blue sky during most time of year.
Another reason why I want to change my hometown’s air pollution situation is that the city’s
development needs clean and tidy environment to attract investors. Nowadays people have come to know that
the city’s environment, which is so called “software facility of the city”, plays an important role in the city’s
future. For example, due to the fact that the environment of the city is very poor, many local students who
pursue their study out of the city would rather find themselves a job in other cities than coming back to their
hometown after they graduated.
In addition, nowadays people have paid more and more attention to their health. If air pollution
problem cannot be solved as quickly as possible, people’s requirement for a healthy body will never be
realized.
In my mind, changing air pollution will apparently be my first choice if I can change one important
thing about my hometown. Fortunately people in my hometown are gradually aware of the serious problem.

These passages concern themselves with the nineteenth-century arguments made for and against women’s
right to vote in the United States. Passage 1 is an excerpt from an address by Isabella Beecher Hooker
before the International Council of Women in 1888. Passage 2 is an excerpt from an 1878 report from the
Senate’s Committee on Privileges and Elections in response to a proposed constitutional amendment that
would give women the right to vote.
PASSAGE 1
First let me speak of the constitution of the United States, and assert that there is not a line in it, nor a
word, forbidding women to vote; but, properly interpreted, that is, interpreted by the Declaration of
Independence, and by the assertions of the Fathers, it actually guarantees to women the right to vote in all

elections, both state and national.
Listen to the preamble to the constitution, and the preamble you know, is the key to what follows; it is the
concrete, general statement of the great principles which subsequent articles express in detail. The preamble
says: “We, The People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure
domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings
of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of
America.”
Commit this to memory, friends; learn it by heart as well as by head, and I should have no need to
argue the question before you of my right to vote. For women are “people” surely, and desire, as much as
men, to say the least, to establish justice and to insure domestic tranquility; and, brothers, you will never

insure domestic tranquility in the days to come unless you allow women to vote, who pay taxes and bear
equally with yourselves all the burdens of society; for they do not mean any longer to submit patiently and
quietly to such injustice, and the sooner men understand this and graciously submit to become the political
equals of their mothers, wives, and daughters—aye, of their grandmothers, for that is my category, instead of
their political masters, as they now are, the sooner will this precious domestic tranquility be insured. Women
are surely “people,” I said, and were when these words were written, and were as anxious as men to establish
justice and promote the general welfare, and no one will have the hardihood to deny that our foremothers have

we not talked about our forefathers alone long enough? did their full share in the work of establishing justice,
providing for the common defense, and promoting the general welfare in all those early days.
The truth is, friends, that when liberties had to be gained by the sword and protected by the sword, men
necessarily came to the front and seemed to be the only creators and defenders of these liberties; hence all the
way down women have been content to do their patriotic work silently and through men, who are the fighters
by nature rather than themselves, until the present day; but now at last, when it is established that ballots
instead of bullets are to rule the world .now, it is high time that women ceased to attempt to establish justice
and promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to themselves and their posterity, through
the votes of men . . .
PASSAGE 2
This proposed amendment forbids the United States or any State to deny or abridge the right to vote on
account of sex. If adopted, it will make several millions of female voters, totally inexperienced in political
affairs, quite generally dependent upon the other sex, all incapable of performing military duty and without
the power to enforce the laws which their numerical strength may enable them to make, and comparatively
very few of whom wish to assume the irksome and responsible political duties which this measure thrusts
upon them.
An experiment so novel, a change so great, should only be made slowly and in response to a general
public demand, of the existence of which there is no evidence before your committee. Petitions from various
parts of the country, containing by estimate about 30,000 names, have been presented to Congress asking for
this legislation. They were procured through the efforts of woman-suffrage societies, thoroughly organized,
with active and zealous managers. The ease with which signatures may be procured to any petition is well
known. The small number of petitioners, when compared with that of the intelligent women in the country, is
striking evidence that there exists among them no general desire to take up the heavy burden of governing,
which so many men seek to evade. It would be unjust, unwise, and impolitic to impose that burden on the
great mass of women throughout the country who do not wish for it, to gratify the comparatively few who do.
It has been strongly urged that without the right of suffrage women are and will be subjected to great
oppression and injustice. But everyone who has examined the subject at all knows that without female
suffrage, legislation for years has improved and is still improving the condition of women. The disabilities
imposed upon her by the common law have, one by one, been swept away until in most of the States she has
the full right to her property and all, or nearly all the rights which can be granted without impairing or

destroying the marriage relation.
These changes have been wrought by the spirit of the age, and are not, generally at least, the result of any
agitation by women in their own behalf. Nor can women justly complain of any partiality in the administration
of justice. They have the sympathy of judges and particularly of juries to an extent which would warrant loud
complaint on the part of their adversaries of the sterner sex. Their appeals to legislatures against injustice are
never unheeded, and there is no doubt that when any considerable part of the women of any State really wish
for the right to vote it will be granted without the intervention of Congress. Any State may grant the right of
suffrage to women. Some of them have done so to a limited extent, and perhaps with good results. It is evident
that in some States public opinion is much more strongly in favor of it than it is in others. Your committee
regards it as unwise and inexpedient to enable three-fourths in number of the States, through an amendment to
the National Constitution, to force woman suffrage upon the other fourth in which the public opinion of both
sexes may be strongly adverse to such a change.
For these reasons, your committee reports back said resolution with a recommendation that it be indefinitely
postponed.

Social parasitism involves one species relying on another to raise its young. Among vertebrates, the
best known social parasites are such birds as cuckoos and cowbirds; the female lays egg in a nest belonging to
another species and leaves it for the host to Line rear. (5). The dulotic species of ants, however, are the
supreme social parasites. Consider, for example, the unusual behavior of ants belonging to the genus
Polyergus. All species of this ant have lost the ability to care for themselves. The workers do not forage for
food, feed their brood or queen, or even clean their own nest. To compensate for these deficits, Polyergus has
become specialized at obtaining workers from the related genus (10) Formica to do these chores.
In a raid, several thousand Polyergus workers will travel up to 500 feet in search of a Formica nest,

penetrate it, drive off the queen and her workers, capture the pupal brood, and transport it back to their nest.
The captured brood is then reared by the resident Formica workers until the developing pupae emerge to add
to the Formica (15) population, which maintains the mixed-species nest. The Formica workers forage for food
and give it to colony members of both species. They also remove wastes and excavate new chambers as the
population increases.
The true extent of the Polyergus ants' dependence on the Formica becomes apparent when the worker
population grows too large for existing nest. Formica scouts locate (20) a new nesting site, return to the mixed
species colony, and recruit additional Formica nest mates. During a period that may last seven days, the
Formica workers carry to the new nest all the Polyergus eggs, larvae, and pupae, every Polyergus adult, and
even the Polyergus queen. Of the approximately 8,000 species of ants in the world, all 5 species of Polyergus
(25) and some 200 species in other genera have evolved some degree of parasitic relationship with other ants.
41. Which of the following statements best represents the main idea of the passage?
A. Ants belonging to the genus Formica are incapable of performing certain tasks.
B. The genus Polyergus is quite similar to the genus Formica.
C. Ants belonging to the genus Polyergus have an unusual relationship with ants belonging to the genus

5. We didn’t go on holiday because we did not have enough money
=> If we............................ .....................................................................
II. Topic: What do you think of the changes in life?
Everything in the universe is in constant change. And everything needs continual improvement if the
ever changing and increasing demands of humankind are to be met. If I am ever given the chance to change
one important thing about my home town, it would be internet service. Needless to say that nothing generally
revolutionized the way we live as internet in the past decade. Thus, an improvement in this vital service would
mean an even more, unheard betterment to the people in my home town.
It is said that information is power. True saying indeed! I can envision how everything in my home
town could improve dramatically if the internet service in it were made free, fast and staying out there like
electricity, telephone or water all the time. One thing, a fast free and reliable internet service could improve
in my home town is the way people work. If there is a this said service people in my home town must not
necessarily commute to a far place to do their job. This in turn would mean less traffic jams, spacious work
place, more time for family and recreation and so on.
The way people learn would be another important thing that a fast, free and reliable internet service
could better in my home town. People will have the chance to go through tremendous and different
information resources in a very small amount of time. They, apparently will also take less time to share it.
This assures a more fulfilled life for my home town people.
Since its advent, internet touched every part of our life. It in a dazzling way improved the way we do
business, learn and communicate. A change in internet service implies good way of living for everyone in my
home town.

Contrary to popular belief, one does not have to be a trained programmer to work online. Of course, there are
plenty of jobs for people with high-tech computer skills, but the growth of new media has opened up a wide

range of internet career opportunities requiring only a minimal level of technical expertise.
Probably one of the most well-known online job opportunities is the job of webmaster. However, it is hard to
define one basic job description for this position. To specify the job description of a webmaster, one needs to
identify the hardware and software that the website the webmaster will manage is running on. Different types of
hardware and software require different skill sets to manage them. Another key factor is whether the website
will be running internally (at the firm itself) or externally (renting shared space on the company servers).
Finally, the responsibilities of a webmaster also depend on whether he or she will be working independently, or
whether the firm will provide people to help. All of these factors need to be considered before one can create an
accurate webmaster job description.
Webmaster is one type of internet career requiring in-depth knowledge of the latest computer applications.
However, there are also online jobs available for which tradition skills remain in high demand. Content jobs
require excellent writing skills and a good sense of the web as a new media. This term is difficult to define
because it encompasses a constantly growing set of new technologies and skills. Specifically, it includes
website, email, Internet telephony, CD-ROM, DVD, streaming audio and video, and so on. With many
companies having to downsize in touch economic times, the outsourcing and contracting of freelance worker
online has become common business practice. The internet provides an infinite pool of buyers from around the
world with whom freelancers can contract their services. Additionally, many of today’s Internet careers are
becoming paid-by-the-job professions. An added benefit to such online jobs is that freelancers are able to work
on projects with companies outside their own country of residence.
How much can a person make in these kinds of careers? As with many questions related to today’s evolving
technology, there is no simple answer. There are many companies willing to pay people with technical Internet

VI. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
Sleep is a natural process, and although a lot have been written about the subject, it is still surrounded by
mystery. It is used by some as an escape from the world, and regarded by others as an irritating waste of time:
some people get by on very little, others claim they can not exist without at least ten hours, but nobody can do
without sleep completely.

Our night’s sleep does not just consist of a steady phase of gradually deepening sleep. It alternates between
two stages: non-dreaming or ordinary sleep, and REM (rapid eye movement) or dreaming sleep. As soon as we
fall asleep, we go straight into non-dreaming sleep for an hour or so, then into REM sleep for about 15 minutes,
then back into non-dreaming sleep. It alternates in this way for the rest of the night, with non-dreaming sleep
tending to last longer at the beginning of the night. Non-dreaming sleep occupies three-quarters of our night’s
sleep, about a quarter of it deep and the rest fairly light.
It is widely believed that sleep repairs the body and makes good the damage caused by being awake.
However, its main function is to refresh the brain. Experts believe that probably only about two-thirds of our
sleep is necessary for repairing and refreshing the brain, with the most valuable sleep coming in the first few
hours of the non-dreaming period, the last few hours of sleep are not so essential. The brain can manage quite
well with reduced sleep as long as it is uninterrupted sleep.
The quality of sleep is important. A study conducted in the USA looked at short sleepers, who slept for 5.5
hours on average, and long sleepers, who had 8.5 hours or more. It is discovered after a variety of tests that the
long sleepers were poor sleepers, had twice as much REM sleep as the short sleepers, appeared to sleep longer
to make up for poor sleep, and did not wake up in the morning refreshed. Similarly, people who sleep deeply
are not necessarily getting a better quality of sleep than shallow sleepers. Deep sleepers can feel tired the
following day, so six hours of good sleep is worth more than eight hours of troubled sleep.
Question 29: It can be concluded from the first paragraph that_____.
A. people need equal time of sleep
C. sleep is among the processes of the nature
B. sleep remains a puzzle
D. everything about sleep has been brought to light
Question 30: All the following statements are true, EXCEPT for__________.
A. we spend only 25 percents of our night’s sleeping time to dream.
B. our night’s sleep occurs in a straight line of only two phases.
C. all sleeps are similar in the alternatives of the two stages during the night.
D. we often have no dreams right after we fall asleep.
Question 31: Unlike the common belief, sleep helps ______. A. not to be awake

II. Topic: Factories in residential areas produce both positive and negative effects to people’s lives. Do you
agree or disagree?
If a large factory is going to be built near your community, is it good or bad? It’s a quite difficult
question to answer. Because there are many aspects to take into your consideration - the advantages and the
disadvantages. Let’s talk about that.
First, a large factory, especially a large chemical factory is quite harmful to our environment when it is
built near our community. It will affect our daily life a lot. All the chemical factories will produce a lot of waste
and most of the wastes are harmful to the environment, including poisonous gas and liquid. Some of them
cannot be entirely broken down. If they are released into the air or the river, it will affect our health. And also
the factory may produce a lot of noise. The environment we want to live in is a quiet and peaceful one, so the

noise will be quite boring. And yes, noise also affects our health.
Still one thing, a factory can be very dangerous. Because a fire or a explosion may break out in the
factory. If it’s very near our home, it’s quite dangerous.
But in other hand, a factory may be a good news to us. It can provide more jobs for us, especially for
the young people in our community. Since the factory is near, it’s so convenient to go to work, and the factory

will get more chances to our area. It will help to develop our area. So if the factory can bring us a lot of
chances, we will agree to build one. But the most important things are:
1. Build the factory in a safe distance from our community, not too near.
2. Make sure that the factory can deal with the waste properly. Do not release the poisonous gas into the air,
and not release the waste water into the river nearby.
3. Make sure the security guard in the factory works very well.
