The modern comic strip started out as ammunition in a newspaper war between giants of the
American press in the late nineteenth century. The first full-color comic strip appeared January 1894 in the
New York World, owned by Joseph Pulitzer. The first regular weekly full-color comic supplement, similar
to today’s Sunday funnies, appeared two years later, in William Randolph Hearst’s rival New York paper,
the Morning Journal.

Both were immensely popular and publishers realized that supplementing the news with comic relief
boosted the sale of papers. The Morning Journal started another feature in 1896, the “Yellow Kid”, the first
continuous comic character in the United States, whose creator, Richard Outcault, had been lured away from
the World by the ambitious Hearst. The “Yellow Kid” was in many ways a pioneer. Its comic dialogue was
the strictly urban farce that came to characterize later strips, and it introduced the speech balloon inside the
strip, usually placed above the characters’ heads.
The first strip to incorporate all the elements of later comics was Rudolph Dirks’s “Katzenjammer
Kids”, based on Wilhelm Busch’s Max and Moritz, a European satire of the nineteenth century. The “Kids”
strip, first published in 1897, served as the prototype for future American strips. It contained not only speech
balloons, but a continuous cast of characters, and was divided into small regular panels that did away with
the larger panoramic scenes of earlier comics.
Newspaper syndication played a major role in spreading the popularity of comic strips throughout
the country. Though weekly colored comics came first, daily black-and-white strips were not far behind. The
first appeared in the Chicago American in 1904. It was followed by many imitators, and by 1915 black-andwhite comic strips had become a staple of daily newspapers around the country.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL
The American type of football was developed in the 19th century from soccer and rugby football.
Played by professionals, amateurs, college, high schools, or young children, football in American is one of
the most popular sports besides basketball and baseball. It attracts millions of fans each fall and people are
very supportive of their favourite teams. The football playing field of today is rectangular in shape and
measures 100 yards long and 53.5 yards wide. White lines are painted on the playing field to mark off the
distances to the end zone. The games is divided into four quarters, each fifteen minutes long. The first two
quarters are known as the first half. There is a rest period between two halves which usually last about
fifteen minutes. Each team has eleven players. Each team has offensive players (play when the team has
possession of the ball) and defensive players ( play when the other team has the possession of the ball).
Because of the body contact players have during the game, helmets are worn to protect their head and face
area, whereas pads are worn to protect the shoulders, arms, and legs. Also, there are officials carrying
whistles and flags to make certain that the rules of the game are followed during the game. The football is
made of leather and is brown in colour. It is shaped much like an oval and has white rings near each end of
the football.. These rings help the players see the ball when it is thrown or someone is running with it. The

In the world today, particularly in the two most industrialized areas, North America and Europe,
recycling is big news. People are talking about it, practicing it, and discovering new ways to be sensitive to
the environment. Recycling means finding was to use products a second time. The motto of the recycling
movement is “ Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”.
The first step is to reduce garbage. In stories, a shopper has to buy products in blisters packs, boxes
and expensive plastic wrappings. A hamburger from a fast food restaurant comes in lots of packaging:
usually paper, a box and a bag. All that packaging is wasted resources. People should try to buy things that
are wrapped simply, and reuse cups and utensils. Another way to reduce waste is to buy high-quality
products. When low quality appliances break, many customers throw them away and buy new ones- a loss
of more resources and more energy. For example, if a customer buys high-quality appliance that can be
easily repaired, the manufacturer receives an important message. In the same way, if a customer chooses a

product with less packaging, that customer sends an important message to manufacturers. To reduce
garbage, the throwaway must stop.
The second step is to reuse. It is better to buy juices and soft drinks in returnable bottles. After
customers empty the bottles, they can return them to the store. The manufacturers of the drinks collect the
bottles, wash them, and then fill them again. The energy that is necessary to make new bottles is saved. In
some parts of the world, returning bottles for money is a common practice. In those places, the garbage
dumps have relatively little glass and plastic from throwaway bottles.
The third step is being environmentally sensitive is to recycle. Spent motor oil can be cleaned and
used again. Aluminum cans are expensive to make. It takes the same amount of energy to make one
aluminum can as it does to run a color TV set for three hours. When people collect and recycle aluminum
(for new cans), they help save one of the world‟s precious resources.

Our eyes and ears might be called transformers because they sense the light and sound around us
and turn them into electrical impulses that the brain can interpret. These electrical impulses that have been
transformed by the eyes and ears reach the brain and are turned into messages that we can interpret. For the
eye, the process begins as the eye admits light waves, bends them at the cornea and lens, and then focuses

them on the retina. At the back of each eye, nerve fibers bundle together to form optic nerves, which join
and then split into two optic tracts. Some of the fibers cross so that part of the input from the right visual
field goes into the left side of the brain, and vice versa. The process in the ear is carried out through
sensory cells that are carried in fluid- filled canals and that are extremely sensitive to vibration. Sound that
is transformed into electricity travels along nerve fibers in the auditory never. These fibers form a synapse
with neurons that carry the messages to the auditory cortex on each side of the brain.

History books record that the first film with sound was The Jazz Singer in 1927. But sound films, or
"talkies", did not suddenly appear after years of silent screenings. From the earliest public performances in
1896, films were accompanied by music and sound effects. These were produced by a single pianist, a small
band, or a full-scale orchestra; large movie theatres could buy- sound-effects machines. Research into sound
that was reproduced at exactly the same time as the pictures – called "synchronized sound" – began soon after
the very first films were shown. With synchronized sound, characters on the movie screen could sing and
speak. As early as 1896, the newly invented gramophone, which played a large disc carrying music and
dialogue, was used as a sound system. The biggest disadvantage was that the sound and pictures could become
unsynchronized if, for example, the gramophone needle jumped or if the speed of the projector changed. This
system was only effective for a single song or dialogue sequence. In the "sound-on-film" system, sounds were

recorded as a series of marks on celluloid which could be read by an optical sensor. These signals would be
placed on the film alongside the image, guaranteeing synchronization. Short feature films were produced in
this way as early as 1922. This system eventually brought us "talking pictures".

Today's cars are smaller, safer, cleaner, and more economical than their predecessors, but the car of the
future will be far more pollution-free than those on the road today. Several new types of automobile engines
have already been developed that run on alternative sources of power, such as electricity, compressed natural

gas, methanol, steam, hydrogen, and propane. Electricity, however, is the only zero-emission option presently
available.
Although electric vehicles will not be truly practical until a powerful, compact battery or other
dependable source of current is available, transportation experts foresee a new assortment of electric vehicles
entering everyday life: shorter-range commuter electric cars, three-wheeled neighborhood cars, electric
delivery vans, bikes, and trolleys.
As automakers work to develop practical electrical vehicles, urban planners and utility engineers are
focusing on infrastructure systems to support and make the best use of the new cars. Public charging facilities
will need to be as common as today's gas stations. Public parking spots on the street or in commercial lots will
need to be equipped with devices that allow drivers to charge their batteries while they stop, dine, or attend a
concert. To encourage the use of electric vehicles, the most convenient parking in transportation centers might
be reserved for electric cars.
Planners foresee electric shuttle buses, trains, buses, and neighborhood vehicles all meeting at transit
centers that would have facilities for charging and renting. Commuters will be able to rent a variety of
electric cars to suit their needs: light trucks, one-person three-wheelers, small cars, or electric/gasoline hybrid
cars for longer trips, which will no doubt take place on automated freeways capable of handling five times the
number of vehicles that can be carried by a freeway today.

Traditional education creates, in time, an incomplete image on family’s gender roles. From generation to
generation
children interiorize theirs parent’s model known as “separated world’s myth” – a wife and a mother only
cooking ,doing laundry and taking care of the child “contrasting” with a husband and a father working or
fixing different things.
According to this mentality each partner has established responsibilities in private and public life that
other one couldn’t take over.
Changing traditional gender roles seems to be difficult not because woman or man don’t have the
necessary skills
for other one’s tasks but because everyone carries on a symbol of his “world”. Society’s evolution especially
on woman valorization redefines gender roles promoting a woman more active, ambitious and independent
and a man more emotional and involved in household tasks.
Women of our days have more liberty to choose between the “family model” – these ones are being more
obedient
and anchored in tradition (the feminine type) and the “feminist model” – who’s priority is the career
(the anti-feminine type) or the middle model adopted by the “double career” type of woman – profession and
family. On the base of any of these choices are variables like social-status, race, education level, culture’s
values etc.
We are assisting to a reprioritization of woman needs and so professional success became more
interesting and even attractive than family one probably because it brings something new. Women are
motivated to choose the career by elements as the wish for financial independency, the need to prove
her capacities, to open and better integrate in modern society and the possibility to control and not being
only controlled. All this reasons offer her a psychological equilibrium.
Most of the men consider women’s career as a conflict source having arguments like: women
will neglect theirs family attributions, the imminent change of man’s authority, his incertitude concerning the
professional competition and the risk to deteriorate the marital relation. Even at first side man and children
are felling the stress generated by the new status of woman, she’s living an interior conflict as well. Woman
need to understand her need for self-accomplishment but the remains of traditional mentality still affect her

modern vision.
So our children should make a difference on gender roles perspective but we are in a vicious circle
because every family is raising their kids for a passed time, influenced by their own mentality and resistance
to change. The main idea is that both women and men should consider this role’s exchange like a challenge
and also accept that a man as well as a woman can do anything with willing.

Culture Shock is not something that people generally get on a holiday but as soon as your boss calls you
into the office and says "Hi John, we value you so much we want you to head our Hong Kong operations!"
you really need
to start thinking about the implications and how you are going to avoid this condition. It is not so
much as a life threatening disease, but it can lead to some very serious problems if you do not take a few
precautions.
Culture shock is definitely a serious condition that needs to be watched, and checked upon. I
personally have suffered from it on numerous occasions and sleep deprivation, mood swings, and depression
are all in there.
Travelling to a new destination with unusual habits and traditions can be a very traumatic
experience. A little research before you leave will help tremendously but the most important thing is to
actually leave with an open mind. A lot of people fly off without any research and expect things to be done in
exactly the same way and at the same speed as they were at home. Well this just isn't going to happen. And it
is very important to try to understand the culture religion and people of the country that you are travelling to.
The culture shock selection of books are a very good starting place, but one that you will not really
understand fully until you are actually in the country mingling with the locals. One interesting point of this
can be found in the book Culture Shock Thailand. Thai people are among the nicest people in the world but it
is a very different world from, let's say, the UK. The book explains a good deal about Thai culture and
traditions and it explains how Thais smile their way out of an embarrassing situation and look down on those
that don't. The book then puts this into a couple of different examples to try to ensure that the reader

understands. One such example is that if you are walking down the street and someone throws dirty water
over you from a doorway, you should smile at the person that did this, showing your forgiveness. This should
help clear the air and the person will most likely go out of their way to help you clean up. Imagine this
happening in London! Thais shy away from confrontation, and this is one of the many aspects that make them

such a happy and kind nation.
If as an expatriate you are moving to a country with severe Culture Shock such as perhaps Cambodia, or
Vietnam,
then even more research would be needed. Nowadays you can possibly do a lot more research than ever with
the growth of the internet. You can see pictures of pretty much every destination in the world and even read
restaurant, hotel and bar reviews without having even left your office. It is also advisable to stay away from a
lot of the other expats especially before you leave and while after you arrive in the destination. A lot of expats
can be very negative about a country, even though they continue to stay there and this is not something that
you need when you have just travelled half way around the world. Instead, leave with an open mind and make
your own judgments about the place after you have started to understand it a little.
One of the biggest causes, though, of Culture Shock is language. It will make an enormous amount of
difference to you if you learn a little or as much as possible of the local language before you leave. Take up
classes and practice it as much as you can; if you are studying Thai, eat out at Thai restaurants and try to
practice your Thai. This small step will make your life a lot simpler and will also give you immediate respect
when you arrive in the foreign country, not to mention open many new doors. If you show an interest in the
other person’s language and culture they will show an interest in you.
If you are being relocated by your company, try to find out a little about the living conditions in that
country and the package that the company offers you. Will they supply you with hotel accommodation or will
you be straight into an apartment or house? Are you given a housing allowance and allowed to choose the
accommodation yourself? Will the company pay the deposits that the landlord requires? Will you have maids?
What about a car? How many return trips will you have a year to your home country? Will they be in
economy or business class? What about your family rights - the wife - the husband - the children? How long is
the posting for? Will the company pay for repatriation due to illness, or unemployment? Do they have
limits to the amount of furniture that you can send over but most importantly bring back? Will they
cover these charges? Do they have any restrictions as to how you send these things? Do they offer you
insurance that is suitable for the country that you are travelling to?
When you arrive it is important to fit in, get a feel for the place, the smells and the sounds. I
would suggest just walking for a day or two experiencing the mystique of the new land you have just
discovered. After a while when you are feeling a little more at home join a club, and make friends socially
outside of your regular work patterns, and try to meet and befriend as many locals a you can, so that you will

really get a deeper understanding of where you and most probably appreciate the differences in culture a lot
more.
Culture Shock basically comes from a lack of understanding and built up anxiety, and can be caused by
the most
minute things, building up. One time in Hong Kong a colleague seemed to be literally screaming at the
waitress in
Cantonese, I was very anxious and asked what was wrong, my colleague looked very confused as to
why I was asking the question and she simply replied that she was ordering some water!
All in all every expat has had his or her bad days, and there are times you just want to get on a plane and
fly back,
however these days are minimal compared to the fun, and amazing discoveries that you will make. Once you
are bitten by the spirit and feeling of adventure you are about to embark on, you will have more difficulty
believe it or not, returning "home" than you imagined especially the longer you stay away.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the

Canadian English is a regional variety of North American English that spans almost the entire
continent. Canadian English became a separate variety of North American English after the American
Revolution, when thousands of Loyalists, people who had supported the British, left the United States and fled
north to Canada. Many Loyalists settled in southern Ontario in the 1780s, and their speech became the basis for
what is called General Canadian, a definition based on the norms of urban middle-class speech.
Modern Canadian English is usually defined by the ways in which it resembles and differs from American or
British English. Canadian English has a great deal in common with the English spoken in the United States,
yet many Americans identify a Canadian accent as British. Many American visitors to Canada think the
Canadian vocabulary sounds British – for example, they notice the British “tap” and “braces” instead of the
American “faucet” and “suspenders”. On the other hand, many British people identify a Canadian accent as
American, and British visitors think the Canadians have become Americanized, saying “gas” and “truck” for
“petrol” and “lorry”.
People who live outside North America often find it difficult to hear the differences between Canadian
and American English. There are many similarities between the two varieties, yet they are far from identical.
Canadian English is instantly recognizable to other Canadians, and one Canadian in a crowded room will
easily spot the other Canadian among the North Americans.
There is no distinctive Canadian grammar. The differences are mainly in pronunciation, vocabulary,
and idioms. Canadian pronunciation reflects the experience of a people struggling for national identity against
two strong influences. About 75 per cent of Canadians use the English “zed” rather than the American “zee”

for the name of the last letter of the alphabet. On the other hand, 75 per cent of Canadians use the American
pronunciation of “schedule”, “tomato”, and “missile”. The most obvious and distinctive feature of Canadian
speech is probably its vowel sound, the diphthong “/ou/”. In Canada, “out” is pronounced like “oat” in nearby
U.S. accents. There are other identifying features of Canadian vowels: for example, “cot” is pronounced the
same as “caught” and “collar” the same as “caller”.
An important characteristic of the vocabulary of Canadian English is the use of many words and phrases
originating in Canada itself, such as “kerosene” and “chesterfield” (“sofa”). Several words are borrowed from
North American Indian languages, for example, “kayak”, “caribou”, “parka”, and “skookum” (“strong”). The
name of the country itself has an Indian origin; the Iroquois word “kanata” originally meant “village”. A

number of terms for ice hockey – “face-off”, “blue-line”, and “puck” – have become part of World Standard
English.
Some features of Canadian English seem to be unique and are often deliberately identified with
Canadian speakers in such contexts as dramatic and literary characterizations. Among the original Canadian
idioms, perhaps the most famous is the almost universal use of “eh?” as a tag question, as in “That’s a good
movie, eh?” “Eh” is also used as a filler during a narrative, as in “I’m walking home from work, eh, and I’m
thinking about dinner. I finally get home, eh, and the refrigerator is empty.”
The traditional view holds that there are no dialects in Canadian English and that Canadians cannot tell
where other Canadians are from just by listening to them. The linguists of today disagree with this view. While
there is a greater degree of homogeneity in Canadian English compared with American English, several dialect
areas do exist across Canada. Linguists have identified distinct dialects for the Maritime Provinces,
Newfoundland, the Ottawa Valley, southern Ontario, the Prairie Provinces, the Arctic North, and the West.

American English?

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer for each of the questions from 39 to 48
Increasing numbers of parents in the U.S. are choosing to teach their children at home. In fact, the U.S.
Department of Education has estimated that in 1999, about 850,000 children were being homeschooled. Some
educational experts say that the real number is double this estimate, and the ranks of homeschooled children
seem to be growing at the average rate of about eleven percent every year.
At one time, there was a theory accounting for homeschooling: it was traditionally used for students
who could not attend school because of behavioral or learning difficulties. Today, however, more parents are
taking on the responsibility of educating their own children at home due to their dissatisfaction with the
educational system. Many parents are unhappy about class size, as well as problems inside the classroom.
Teacher shortages and lack of funding mean that, in many schools, one teacher is responsible for thirty or forty

students. The children are, therefore, deprived of the attention they need. Escalating classroom violence has
also motivated some parents to remove their children from school.
Although there have been a lot of arguments for and against it, homeschooling in the U.S. has become
a multi-million dollar industry, and it is growing bigger and bigger. There are now plenty of websites, support
groups, and conventions that help parents protect their rights and enable them to learn more about educating
their children. Though once it was the only choice for troubled children, homeschooling today is an accepted
alternative to an educational system that many believe is failing.
