V/ Read this story about the Songkran Festival in Thailand first, then choose the best option for the
sentence above.
Thailand's most famous festival is the Songkran Festival. It has been celebrated for
hundreds of years and lasts between three and 10 days. The word Songkran is from the Sanskrit
language and means ‘New Year’. Until 1888 this was the beginning of the Thai year. Of course,
January 1st is now the beginning of the year worldwide, but Songkran is still celebrated annually
in Thailand. The 13th April is a national holiday, marking the beginning of the celebration.
Water plays a big part in the celebration, as it symbolises washing all the badness away.
Traditionally, young people put water or oil onto the hands of their parents as a mark of respect.

Years ago, old people had a bath and were dressed in new clothes presented by young children.
The new clothes represented the New Year and the old clothes were thrown away. Thai people
believe that you should throw away anything old and useless as it will bring the owner bad luck.
Until recently almost everyone in Thailand worked as farmers. Songkran was an ideal
time to stop working and celebrate with friends and family. Today everybody joins in. In every
street you will see people throwing water and having fun with water guns and toys. Young Thais
love a chance to get their friends wet. This is the start of the hottest season of the year so the
custom is quite refreshing.
