Part 2 : Read the text and circle the best answer to each of the questions that follow :
We stood in Syntagma about nine o'clock in the heat of an August evening preparing to start the business of
going round the small hotels to look for a room. We had a map and I knew the alphabet from my schooldays and
from various problems in algebra and geometry, which use many of the letters , especially the one that helps you
with the area of circles.
In the bus , as Europe passed the windows of the great six -wheeler and on the ferry I 'd tried to learn the numbers
and a few of the most useful phrases . At least we would be able to understand the price of things and exchange the
normal polite greetings .We would realize later how much English was spoken , particularly in matters of buying
and selling.
With pages photocopied from a "Rough Guide to Athens" we set off. Soon it was obvious Athens was full
of English speakers using the " Rough Guide ".At one reception desk after another people were "Sorry but...
perhaps tomorrow ".Finally we got to the bottom of yet another long street running down from Syntagma and went
through the doorway of yet another hotel to begin our ritual "Eh- heh- teh thomah-te- oh? "Have you a room ? "
A large man sat behind a desk . It was after eleven o'clock at night and we waited for the now familiar
apology and suggestion that we come back tomorrow . "Well now ",he said in faultness English, " If you don't mind
waiting till the staff clean and prepare it , there 'll be a room ready in about an hour "After resting our tired legs
and feet in the hotel 's small bar, the large man appeared, picked up our bags and led us to a lift.
" It 's on the top floor , " he said : " On the roof ". He saw our look ."Don't worry, it 's very comfortable.
"We ascended, stepped out , followed him up a flight of stairs and through a doorway into the open . The night sky
was all around us full of very bright stars. He stopped at a door , opened it and put our bags on the floor. We

followed him . It was to be our home for the next three weeks . He handed us the key.

" Come outside . I 'd like you to see something", he said and walked to the end of the roof. " Just look
round there ". We leaned out over the parapet just enough to be safe and put our heads round the corner of the
building . In the distance on the top of its hill, fully lit and clearly outlined against the night sky, was the Acropolis.
Later, one memorable night, we would walk round it by moonlight, but I don't think anything could ever equal the
magic of first seeing it the way we did, just a little before midnight from the top of a Athens roof.

Part III. You are going to read a newspaper article about ancient rock art. Choose the answer A, B, C or D
which you think fits best according to the text then write your answers in the box given.

Tens of thousands of ancient pictures carved into the rocks at
one of France’s most important tourist sites are being
gradually destroyed. Scientists and researchers fear that the
36.000 drawings on rocks in Mont Bego in the French Alps
are being damaged so rapidly that they will not survive for

future generations.
The mountain, believed to have once been a site for prayer
and worship, is scattered with 4,000 year-old drawings cut
into bare rock. They include pictures of cows with horns,
cultivated fields and various gods and goddesses. But as the
popularity of the site increases, the pictures are being ruined
by thoughtless graffiti.
Jean Clottes is the chairman of the International Committee
on Rock Art. He says, “People think that because the picture
have been there so long they will always continue to be
there. But if the damage continues as this rate there will be
nothing left in 50 years.”
He describes seeing tourists stamping on the drawings,
wearing away the rock and definition of the artwork as they
do so. Some visitors, he says, even chop off parts to take
home as souvenirs
“When people think they can’t take a good enough
photograph, they rub the drawings to get a clearer picture,”
he said. “The drawings are polished by the weather, and if
the sun is shining and the visitors can’t see them properly
they simply rub and scrape them to make them look
fresher.”
Other researchers describe hoe people arrive carrying long
sticks with sharp ends to scratch their own drawings, or even
their names, in the rock.
But experts are divided over the best way to preserve the
drawings. Henry de Lumley, director of the Museum of
Natural History in Paris, believes that the only way to save
the site is to turn the whole mountain into a “no-go” area,

preventing the public from going there except on
guided tours. Otherwise, he says, not only will the site
be completely destroyed but important research work
will be reduced.
Clottes disagrees. “The measure proposed by Henry
de Lumley is the most severe, and while it is the most
effective, it is also certain to bring about protests from
people who live there,” he said. “The site was
classified as a historic monument years ago by the
Ministry of Culture, and we must do as much as
possible to save what is there.”
David Lavergne, the regional architect, also wants to
avoid closing the site. “Henry de Lumley’s idea isn’t
ideal,” he said. “Our department feels that the best
solution is to let people look at the site, but because
the area is very big it is difficult to prevent visitors
from damaging it. I would prefer that everyone was
able to look at it, but the main problem is financial.
We don’t have the funds to employ the necessary
number of guards. We may have to consider charging
a fee. There seems to be no prospect of government
funding.”
In Nice, Annie Echassoux, who also worked on
researching the site, is alarmed that as the mountain
becomes easier to reach – tourists can now avoid the
three-and-a-half-hour walk by hiring vehicles – the
damage will increase rapidly. She thinks that the only
solution is to rope off the area and provide guides.
“You can’t say the plan can’t go ahead because there
is no money,” he said. “That is not good enough.

Money must be provided because the Ministry of
Culture has classified this area as a historic site. If we
don’t take steps, we will be responsible for losing the
drawings for the next generation.”

QUESTION IV. Reading (30 points)
A. Read the text below and then answer the questions 1 - 8 (10 points)
The World and Its Global Economy
The world as man knows it today is getting smaller and smaller because of technology such as the Internet

and high speed modems. In fact, on March 3, 2005, a man flew entirely around the globe without refueling
or stopping in a one-person jet. The world is changing the world, and as the 21 st century continues, the
global economy will play a larger and larger role. As Thomas Friedman so eloquently put it in Lexus and
the Olive Tree, globalization is "the inexorable integration of markets, nation-states, and technologies to a
degree never witnessed before."
A With today's technology it is possible for people to solicit business from the far side of the globe. B
A company like Dell Computers can order parts from several different countries, take shipment in North
Carolina where the new computers will be assembled, and then ship them to all regions of the globe . C
An American oil firm can do a satellite survey in Siberia for oil deposits and then contract with a Russian
oil firm to drill the actual well, while the petroleum engineer, acting as the project supervisor, remains in

the US and runs the project by using a computer, a high speed Internet connection, and a cellular
telephone for quick questions. D
A global economy poses some serious problems. If a company doesn't act fast enough, it can lose, and if
the company loses heavily, what will happen to the employees working for the company, and then in turn
what will happen to the stores that depend on those employees buying their goods? As can be seen, there
is a definite trickle-down effect. How is the child who is about to graduate from high school supposed to
decide on what career field to enter? A career field that is here today might be gone long before the child
can graduate from college, so not only does it become vital that a person gain the needed knowledge to
enter a given career field, but the person also needs to learn how to learn. Learning how to learn may
prove to be even more necessary than the knowledge needed to enter a given career field. A person who
is good at learning how to learn can quickly adapt to changes in the global economy by quickly preparing
to enter other career fields if his job is here today, but gone in the morning.
If the world turns into a global economy, a person will need to be able to get along and work with people
from different cultural backgrounds. However, unless a person has spent time living in different parts of the
world, this might be hard to do. While many students from foreign countries, especially the Asian countries,
come to the US to earn a graduate degree, how many students from the US spend even a semester abroad
studying in another country? The answer to this question is of course a very small percentage.
While individuals from some of foreign countries and some individuals from the US and the US economy

will adjust to globalization, will the rest of the world? Mass media are more than willing to continue to
stir the pot of controversy as they not only have to learn how to report the positive news, but also dole out
a continuous stream of negative news. When a person in a developing country sees all the cars on the
streets of Beijing, of course that person wants a car so he can show his neighbor how wealthy he is, and
all this does is promote unneeded consumption. Why does the person who has nowhere to go and no
money to spend for travel want to own a car? The simple answer is because the media paint owning a car
as a symbol of wealth and it is human nature to want to become wealthy or at least to appear wealthy.
On the positive side, as prices rise due to increased demands on scarce resources, there will be an
incentive to find affordable alternatives. For example, as the price of oil rises and along with it the price
of a gallon of gasoline, a point will be reached at which people are no longer willing to purchase gasoline
so they can drive their cars, and they will demand both alternative transportation methods and cars which
use another source of energy. A current online survey says $2.50 per gallon of gasoline is the point at
which the people in the US will start making demands on the auto manufacturer, which will open up new
career fields in a few countries that have the technology needed to meet the demands; however, people
around the globe will work together on it.
