Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions.
Who talk more – men or women? Most people believe that women talk more. However,
linguist Deborah Tannen, who has studied the communication style of men and women, says that
this is a stereotype. According to Tannen, women are more verbal – talk more – in private
situations, where they use conversation as the “glue” to hold relationships together. But, she
says, men talk more in public situations, where they use conversation to exchange information
and gain status. Tannen points out that we can see these differences even in children. Little girls
often play with one “best friend”, their play includes a lot of conversation. Little boys often play
games in groups; their play usually involves more doing than talking. In school, girls are often

better at verbal skills, boys are often better at mathematics.
A recent study at Emory University helps to shed light on the roots of this difference.
Researchers studied conversation between children age 3-6 and their parents. They found
evidence that parents talk very differently to their son than they do to their daughters. The

startling conclusion was that parents use more language with their girls. Specifically, when
parents talk with their daughters, they use more descriptive language and more details. There is
also far more talk about emotions, especially sadness, with daughters than with sons.

HEALTH AND HAPPINESS
Health experts suggest that ……[<1>]….... healthy and happy, it’s important to keep our
lives in balance. Chinese philosophy, which has spanned thousands of years, uses the principles
of yin and yang to explain the importance of balance in life. Explained simply, yang represents
the active elements of the universe, ……[<2>]….... the yin represents the passive elements. This
expresses the importance of balance in ……[<3>]….... of living. Today health experts agree that it’s
important to have a balanced life. For example, they’ve said it’s necessary to have a balance
between work and rest and to have a balanced exercise program. ……[<4>]…...., I’m sure you’d
agree that in our busy world, it’s not always easy to get and keep balance in our lives.
……[<5>]….... business or study deadlines, many people work to excess, leaving little time
at the end of their busy day to spend with family and friends. They eat fast - food and don’t get

enough rest or recreation and then suffer badly from the effects of stress. It’s sad that this
situation often happens when people believe that access to ……[<6>]….... is the answer to
happiness instead of understanding the importance of balanced living.
While ambition can be a good thing, ……[<7>]….... too much ambition can cause a person to
become ‘out of balance’. Of course it’s also unbalanced to spend too much time on entertainment
and pleasure activities, with little or no time ……[<8>]….... to work or education. Balance means
allocating enough time for all the important aspects of life, such as spending time with family and
friends, working or studying, as well as resting and relaxing.
Experts now tell us that having balance in our life is the answer, not only to health and
happiness, ……[<9>]….... to success. If you’re balanced, you’ll have more energy and you’ll reach
your ambitions in a more relaxed fashion; with less stress. So ……[<10>]….... is your life? Do you
need to allocate your time differently to have better balance in your life?

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate

the correct answer to each of the questions.
A number of factors related to the voice reveal the personality of the speaker. The first is the
broad area of communication, which includes imparting information by use of language,
communicating with a group or an individual, and specialized communication through
performance. A person conveys thoughts and ideas through choice of words, by a tone of voice
that is pleasant or unpleasant, gentle or harsh, by the rhythm that is inherent within the
language itself, and by speech rhythms that are flowing and regular or uneven and hesitant, and
finally, by the pitch and melody of the utterance. When speaking before a group, a person's tone
may indicate unsureness or fright, confidence or calm. At interpersonal levels, the tone may
reflect ideas and feelings over and above the words chosen, or may belie them. Here the
speaker's tone can consciously or unconsciously reflect intuitive sympathy or antipathy, lack of
concern or interest, fatigue, anxiety, enthusiasm or excitement, all of which are usually
discernible by the acute listener. Public performance is a manner of communication that is highly
specialized with its own techniques for obtaining effects by voice and /or gesture. The
motivation derived from the text, and in the case of singing, the music, in combination with the
performer's skills, personality, and ability to create empathy will determine the success

of artistic, political, or pedagogic communication.
Second, the voice gives psychological clues to a person's self-image, perception of others, and
emotional health. Self-image can be indicated by a tone of voice that is confident, pretentious,
shy, aggressive, outgoing, or exuberant, to name only a few personality traits. Also the sound

may give a clue to the facade or mask of that person, for example, a shy person hiding behind an
overconfident front. How a speaker perceives the listener's receptiveness, interest, or sympathy
in any given conversation can drastically alter the tone of presentation, by encouraging or
discouraging the speaker. Emotional health is evidenced in the voice by free and melodic sounds
of the happy, by constricted and harsh sound of the angry, and by dull and lethargic qualities of
the depressed.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the question from 41 to 50
Line The principle of use and disuse states that those parts of organisms' bodies that are used grown larger.
Those
parts that are not tend to wither away. It is an observed fact that when you exercise particular
muscles, they
grow. Those that are never used dimish. By examining a man's body, we can tell
which muscles he uses and
which he doesn't. we may even be able to guess his profession or his
reaction. Enthusiasts of the "body- building"
5 cult make use of the principle of use and disuse to "build" their bodies, almost like a piece of
sculpture, into whatever unnatural shape is demanded by fashion in this peculiar minority culture.
Muscles are not the only parts of the body that respond to use in this kind of way. Walk barefoot and
you acquire harder skin on your soles. It is easy to tell a farmer from a bank teller by looking at

their hands alone. The farmer's hands are horny, hardened
10 by long exposure to rough work. The teller's hands are relatively soft.
The principle of use and disuse enables animals to become better at the job of surviving in their
world, progressively better during their lifetime as a result of living in that world. Humans, through
direct exposure to sunlight, or lack of it, develop a skin color which equips them better to survive in
the particular local conditions.
15 Too much sunlight is dangerous. Enthusiastic sunbathers with very fair skins are susceptible to skin
cancer. Too little sunlight, on the other hand, leads to vitamin-D deficiency and rickets. The brown
pigment melanin which is synthesized under the influence of sunlight, makes a screen to protect the
underlying tissues from the harmful effects of further sunlight. If a suntanned person moves to a
less sunny climate, the melanin disappears, and the body is able to benefit from what little sun there
is. This can be represented as an instance of the principle of use
20 and disuse: skin goes brown when it is "used", and fades to white when it is not.
41. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. How the principles of use and disuse change people's concepts of themselves.
B. The way in which people change themselves to conform to fashion.
C. The changes that occur according to the principle of use and disuse.

word for each of the blanks from 66 to 75
Line A small but growing group of scholar, evolutionary, psychologists, are being to sketch the contours
of the human mind as designed by natural selection. Some of them even anticipate the coming of a
field called "mismatch theory", which would study maladies resulting from contrasts between the
modern environment and the "ancestral environment". The one we were designed for.
5
There is no shortage of such maladies to study, Rates of depression have been doubling in some
industrial countries roughly every 10 years. Suicide is the third most common cause of death among
young adults, after car wrecks and homicides.
Evolutionary psychology is a long way from explaining all this with precision, but it is already
shedding enough 10 light to challenges some conventional wisdom. It suggests, for example, that the
nostalgia for the nuclear family
of the 1950s is in some way misguided - that the model family of
husband at work and wife at home is hardly a
"natural" and healthful living arrangement, especially
for the wives. Moreover, the bygone lifestyles that do
look fairly natural in light of evolutionary
psychology appear to have been eroded largely by commercialism. Perhaps the biggest surprise from
evolutionary psychology it its depiction of the "animal" in us. Freud, and
15
various thinkers since, saw "civilization" as an oppressive force that thwarts basic animal instincts
and urges and transmutes them into psychopathology. However, evolutionary psychology suggests
that a larger threat to metal health may be the way civilization thwarts civility. There is a gentler,
kinder side of human nature, and it seems increasingly to be a victim of repression in modern society.

Universally acclaimed as America’s greatest playwright, Eugene O’Neill was born in 1888 in the heart
of the theater district in New York City. As the son of an actor he had early exposure to the world of the
theater. He attended Princeton University briefly in 1906, but returned to New York to work in a variety of
jobs before joining the crew of a freighter as a seaman. Upon returning from voyages to South Africa and
South America, he was hospitalized for six months to recuperate from tuberculosis. While he was
recovering, he determined to write a play about his adventures on the sea. He went to Harvard, where he
wrote the one-act Bound East for Cardiff. It was produced on Cape Cod by the Provincetown Players, an
experimental theater group that was later to settle in the famous Greenwich Village theater district in New
York City. The Players produced several more of his one-acts in the years between 1916-1920. With the fulllength play Beyond the Horizon, produced on Broadway in 1920, O’Neill’s success was assured. The play
won the Pulitzer prize for the best play of the year. O’Neill was to be awarded the prize again in 1922, 1928,
and 1957 for Anna Christie, Strange Interlude, and Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Although he didn’t
receive the Pulitzer prize for it, Mourning becomes Electra, produced in 1931,is arguably his most lasting
contribution to the American theatre. In 1936, he was awarded the Nobel Prize.
O’Neill’s plays, forty-five in all, cover a wide range of dramatic subjects, but several themes emerge,
including the ambivalence of family relationships, the struggle between the sexes, the conflict between
spiritual and material desires, and the vision of modern man as a victim of uncontrollable circumstances.
Most of O’Neill’s characters are seeking for meaning in their lives. According to his biographers, most of the
characters were portraits of himself and his family. In a sense, his work chronicled his life.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the following questions.
Real estate agents work on behalf of property owners and earn a commission, or percentage, of the
sale or rental of property. Agents are employed by real estate agencies that sell or rent property as well as
manage, appraise, or develop real estate. Some agencies combine their real estate business with an
insurance agency or law practice. Most real estate agents sell private homes. Some specialize in
commercial property such as factories, apartment buildings, stores and office buildings. Others specialize in

undeveloped land sites for commercial or residential use or go into agricultural real estate.
Real estate agents work from a file of listings of property that is for sale or rent. A listing is an
agreement, usually in the form of a contract, between the owners of the property and the agent. The owners
agree to pay the agent a percentage of the selling price. Real estate agents obtain new listings for their
agency by locating property owners interested in selling. For example, they may call home owners who are
trying to visit newly listed properties so that they can familiarize themselves with the features of the property
before bringing prospective buyers to see it.
In any sale, the agents have to negotiate with both the seller and the buyers. Many sellers begin by
asking more for their property than buyers are willing to pay for it. Agents must be able to convince sellers to
set a realistic price. Most of the agents’ efforts focus on the buyers, however. Agents try to learn what will
motivate the buyer to make a purchase. Agents must be able to convince them that the property suits their
needs and is a good buy. Buyers generally offer less for a property than the seller asks. Agents help to
negotiate the final price. They usually help buyers arrange bank loans and are generally present at closings,
when final contracts of sale are signed.
Real estate agents spend a great deal of time on the telephone, locating property that is for sale and
negotiating with clients and property owners. They also spend time in the field checking out new property
and showing real estate to prospective buyers. Most agents work nights and weekends in order to arrange
meetings that are convenient to buyers and sellers. Real estate agents can be fairly independent in their
work and can feel the satisfaction of finding the right property for the right buyer.

A yêm was a sexy simply-cut piece of usually simple cloth, which could be
either outerwear or
with

hot

undershirt.

As

Vietnam

has

a

tropical

climate

and humid summers, the lighter and airier the clothes are

the better. The yêm was the solution in the old days for Vietnamese people to the
10

environment. Colours and materials of the yêm reflected the woman’s age and
social status. Older women tended to wear round-necked, and younger ones the
v-neck style. The working-class women wore dark colours such as black, beige,
or brown, and coarse cloth, while the elite opted for more festive, brighter tones
such as red and pink or white, normally in dedicate cloth such as silk or satin.

Throughout history, the design of the yêm stayed almost the same. However,

there was much room for flexibility. When a woman was young, she tied the
strings loosely to let the neck come lower, especially when she wore necklaces.
When she got older, she pulled the strings tighter to raise the neck higher. This is
a good example of the Vietnamese dressing style – simplicity but with a height
of delicacy and sexiness.

The yêm dates to the Hung Kings (2879 BC - 258 AD). Evidence can be found
in the images of women in decoration on a Dong Xa bronze drum, cast over
2,000 years ago. It made its way down to around

1945 as a traditional costume

exclusively of Vietnamese women. Photos of Vietnamese women in the 1940s
still showed some of them wearing the yêm. From the mid-20th century, along
with the decline of the yêm to give way for Western dressing trends, many
traditions disappeared, such as tying the hair around the head, or having the teeth
dyed. Recently, the yêm is making a comeback, but only on the catwalk.
