II. READING COMPREHENSION (20 ms)
Read the following paragraphs about building materials and answer the questions below.
Đọc và trả lời câu hỏi dưới đây.)
In modern times the use of recycled materials as concrete ingredients is gaining popularity because of
increasingly stringent (chặt chẽ) environmental legislation. The most conspicuous (đáng chú ý) of these is fly
ash, a byproduct of coal fired power plants. This has a significant impact by reducing the amount of quarrying
(khai thác đá mỏ) and landfill space required, and, as it acts as a cement replacement, reduces the amount of
cement required to produce a solid concrete. As cement production creates massive quantities of carbon
dioxide, cement replacement technology such as this will play a huge role in future attempts to cut CO2.
Concrete additives have been used since Roman and Egyptian times when it was discovered that adding
volcanic ash to the mix allowed it to set under water. Similarly, the Romans knew that adding horse hair made
concrete less liable to crack while it hardened, and adding blood made it more frost resistant.
In modern times, researchers have experimented with the addition of other materials to create concrete with
improved properties, such as higher strength or electrical conductivity.
1. Why is the use of recycled materials as concrete ingredients gaining popularity?

II. READING COMPREHENSION (20 ms)
Read the following paragraphs and answer the questions below.
Đọc và trả lời câu hỏi dưới đây.)
When cement is mixed with water to form a soft paste, it gradually stiffens until it becomes a solid.
This process is known as setting and hardening. The setting and hardening of Portland cement may be divided
into three stages. Some 30 minutes after the water has been added to the cement, the mixture ceases to be
plastic. This process is called the initial set. The process continues, and after a lapse (a period of time) of
about 10 hours the mixture reaches a condition called final set. The third stage during which it attains its
permanent form is called hardening.
Concrete made with Portland cement generally needs about 2 weeks to reach sufficient stress so that
forms of beams and slabs can be removed. They reach the design strength after 28 days and continue to gain
strength there after at a decreasing rate. To speed construction when needed, high-early-strength cements may
be used; they are more costly than ordinary Portland cement, but reach, within one to three days, the strength
a Portland cement would have after 28 days.
Questions
1. What do you know about setting and hardening of Portland cement?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
2. How long does the initial set last for the mixture to cease to be plastic?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
3. How is Portland cement in the last stage of setting and hardening?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

4. In what condition can beams and slabs be removed from concrete?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
5. Why should high-early-strength cements be used?
