PHRASAL VERB THROUGH EXAMPLES
1) Let's find a place where we can wait out the storm.
 wait sth out: if you wait out an event, period, or time, especially an unpleasant one, you wait for it to finish
2) Hey, you guys, cut it out - Mom's trying to get some sleep.
 cut it/that out: used to tell someone to stop doing something because it is annoying you

 make for: to cause a particular result or situation

4) Fatherhood seems to have brought out the caring side of him.
 bring sth out: to make something easier to see, taste, notice etc
5) The thought of mother alone like that was eating away at her.
 eat away at sth: to make someone feel very worried over a long period of time

6) She immediately zeroed in on the weak point in his argument.
 zero in on sth: to fix your attention on the person or thing mentioned = home in on

7) She couldn't find any cola, so had to settle for orange juice.
 settle for: to accept sth that is not the exactly what you want but the best available

8) What time does the laser show kick off?
 kick off sth: to start discussion, an event, a meeting, etc.

9) She wanted to tell him but pride held her back.
 hold sb back from doing sth: to make sb hesitate to act or speak

10) The threat of redundancy was still hanging over us.
 hang over sb: if sth bad or unpleasant is hanging over you, you think about it and worry about it a lot

 touch sth off: to make sth begin, esp a difficult or violent situation

 face off: to get ready to argue, fight or compete with sb  face-off(n)

 squirrel sth away: to hide or store sth so that it can be used later = stash away

 egg sb on: to encourage sb to do sth, esp sth they shouldn’t do

 apprise sb of sth: to tell or inform sb of sth

18) Many parents may baulk at the idea of paying $100 for a pair of shoes.
 baulk at sth: unwilling to do or to become involved
