SECTION A
I. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions
We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their
knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming pupils. It
does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both
the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top
grade!
Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one
aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not
just their academy ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability
teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning.
In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups; this gives them the
opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope
with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to
communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teachers.
Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments; and they
can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We
encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this effectively.
An advanced pupil can do advanced work; it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to
do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.

V. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions
Rachel Carson was born in 1907 in Springdale, Pennsylvania. She studied biology in college and zoology at
Johns Hopkins University, where she received her master’s degree in 1933. In 1936, she was hired by the

US Fish and wildlife service, where she worked most of her life.
Carson’s first book, Under the Sea Wind, was published in 1941. It received excellent reviews, but sales
were poor until it was reissued in 1952. In that year, she published The Sea Around Us, which provided a
fascinating look beneath the ocean’s surface, emphasizing human history as well as geology and marine
biology. Her language had a poetic quality. Carson consulted no less than 1,000 printed sources. She had
voluminous correspondence and frequent discussions with experts in the field. However, she always realized
the limitations of her non-technical readers.
In 1962, Carson published Silence Spring, a book that sparked considerable controversy. It proved how
much harm was done by the uncontrolled, reckless use of insecticides. She detailed how they poison the
food supply of animals, kill birds, and contaminate human food. At that time, spokes men for the chemical
industry mounted personal attacks against Carson and issued propaganda to indicate that her findings were
flawed. However, her work was vindicated by a 1963 report of the President’s Science Advisory Committee.
