** Comparative and Superlative adjectives
• Short As:
- add – er/est to A-:
young - younger / youngest
tall – taller / tallest
Ex: She is taller than me.
She is the tallest of all students in my class.
- As ending in-e:
nice – nicer / nicest
safe – safer / safest
Ex: She is nicer than my sister.
She is the nicest girl I’ve ever met.
- As ending a vowel + a consonant, double
the consonant and add-er/ est.
thin - thinner/ thinnest
wet - wetter / wettest
hot - hotter / hottest
big - bigger / biggest
fat - fatter / fattest
Ex: He is thinner than my brother.
It’s the biggest box of all we’ve carried.
- As that have two syllables and end in –y,
change into –ier/ iest
Friendly –friendlier / friendliest
Pretty – prettier / prettiest
Noisy – noisier / noisiest
Busy – busier/ busiest
Ex: He is friendlier than you.
He is the friendliest person I’ve ever met.
• Long A:
-add – more/ less (than
the most / the least (of all sth; in a place) to
the As.
• Dangerous –more dangerous/ the most
dangerous
Ex: Driving a car is more dangerous than
cycling.
• This stress is the most dangerous of all
we’ve ever seen.
• Experienced – more/ less experienced
• She is more (less) experienced than him.
• She is the most (least) experienced
person of all in my office.
• Powerful - more powerful
• People in the Dinka tribe thought that a fat
man is more powerful than the others.
• People in the Dinka tribe thought that a fat
man is the most powerful of all the others.
Irregular AS
Good – better / the best
Bad – worse / the worst
Far – farther / the farthest
Much/many- more/ the most
Little = less/ the least
Near – nearer / the nearest – the next
Late – later / the latest – the last
She is the best student of all I’ve ever taught.
He is the worst student of all I’ve ever taught.
** Equality As
as + A + as
This room is as large as this one.
These lessons are as difficult as those ones.
** Inequality As
not as + A + as
not so + A + as
She is not as pretty as my sister.
This movie was not so interesting as that
one.
Comparison of Adverbs
as + ADV + as
Ex : I can run as fast as you can.

Comparative and superlative forms of ADVs
are the same as for As.
a. Add -er or est to short Advs:
