1- The Asian Games, also called the ASIAD, is a multi-sport event held every four years
among athletes from all over Asia. The games are regulated by the Olympic Council of Asia

(OCA) under the supervision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Medals are
awarded in each event, with gold for the first place, silver for second and bronze for third. This
tradition started in 1951. The Asian Games are dominated by the People’s Republic of China.
Competitors are entered by a National Olympic Committee (NOC) to represent their country of
citizenship. National anthems and flags accompany the medal ceremonies, and tables showing
the number of medals won by each country are widely used. In general, only recognized
nations are represented, but a few non-sovereign countries are allowed to take part. The
special case of Taiwan was handled by having it compete as Chinese Taipei due to the political
status of Taiwan.
The 15th Asian Games were held in Doha, Qatar from December 1 st to December 16th, 2005.
The 16th ASIAD were held in Guangzhou, China from November 2 nd to November 18th, 2010.

2- We humans create such a lot of rubbish! Between 1992 and 2008 household waste
increased by 16% and we now produce just under half a ton per person each year. Most of this
is taken away by dustmen and buried in enormous landfill sites or burned in incinerators - both
of these actions can be dangerous for the environment. Is all our rubbish really rubbish? If you
think about it, much of what we throw away could be used again. It makes sense to reuse and
recycle our rubbish instead of just trying to solve the problem of where to put it! Encouragingly
rates of recycling have increased so that we recycle 35 % of our household rubbish, although
we could recycle up to 80%. Much of our waste is made up of glass, metal, plastic and paper.
Our natural resources such as trees, oil, coal are used up in enormous amounts to make these

products, and the resources will one day be completely used up. Thus, we must cut down on
energy use.
1. How much waste was does a person produce each year?

2. What must we cut down on energy use for?
………………………………………………………………………..
3. What are the two common ways of treating most of the waste?

3- A new study shows that women can reduce their chances of developing heart disease by
jogging for about three hours every week. The researchers at Harvard University Medical in
Boston have just reported the results of the study on the New England Journal of Medicine.
The study is the first to show the effectiveness of jogging in the developing of heart disease in
women. Only a few earlier studies have examined the effects of jogging on the heart, but
nearly all have been done on men. The new study involves more than 72,000 women between
the ages of forty and sixty-five during a period of eight years. The researchers have found that
women who jog at least three hours a week have a thirty to forty percent lower chance of
suffering a heart attack than those who do not.
1. Who have done the research?
