Hello, everybody. My name is…..of group one. Today, it is an honor for our group
to stand here and make the presentation to you. The topic of our group is “Popular
music”. The presentation consists of …. parts. The first is….., second is….. and
last but not least is the conclusion.
Before getting started, I invited all of you to join a game called “crossword puzzle”
to warm up our class.
The puzzle has five rows equivalent with five questions
To take your chance, please raise your hand and then choose the question.
Question 1: Listen and answer the question: Whose voice is this?
Question 2: Look at the picture and answer the question: Who are they?

Question 4: Listen and answer the question: What makes the sound?

As you can see, the key word we have found is “MUSIC”. And today, we would
like to introduce to give you a thorough picture of “Popular music”. Our
presentation will consist of …. parts. Firstly, we come up with the introduction.
Music is an art about sound, rhythm and melody. Most music includes people
singing with their voices or playing musical instruments, such as the piano, guitar,
or drums. Music can be divided into art music, traditional music and popular
music.
Art music is a term which includes classical music, and various kinds of serious
modern music. Classical music thrived on the 19 th century with some famous


composers as Johann Sebastian Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. The musical
instruments are commonly used in classical music are the piano, violin, cello,
guitar, flute, saxophone, trumpet, bass drum and others.
In Vietnam, the Vietnam National Symphony, founded in 1959, is based at the
Hanoi National Conservatory of Music. Dang Thai Son is Vietnam's most
celebrated classical musician.
Traditional music is a modern name for what has been called "folk music". Folk


music envoled on the 20th century. Folk music is traditional music that people learn
by listening to other people playing it and then copying them. Every country has its
own traditional music.
In Vietnam, folk music includes chèo, quan họ, hát chầu văn, cải lương (Renovated
Opera), Vietnamese Lullaby Songs (hát ru) and other forms. The musical
instruments can be Đàn nhị (two-stringed fiddle), Đàn bầu (monochord zither),
Đàn nguyệt (two-stringed guitar), Đàn tam (Three-string Lute), Đàn tỳ bà (fourstringed guitar), Đàn tranh (long zither), Bamboo flute, T'rưng (bamboo
xylophone), Trong com (Rice Drum), and orthes.
Popular music is genres "having wide appeal". Popular music includes pop, rock,
jazz and so on.
Pop started from 1950s and derived from rock and roll. Pop music often borrows
elements from other styles such as urban, dance, rock, Latin, and country. The pop
stars are Michael Jackson, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Britney
Spears.
V-pop (Nhạc Pop Việt Nam), an abbreviation for Vietnamese pop, is a musical
genre covering Vietnamese music from the 1990s to modern-day. In Vietnam, it is


also known as "youth music" (nhac trẻ). During the 2010s, K-Pop had already
spread to South East Asia, and it was a big influence for the Vietnamese
entertainment industry. V-pop styles include fashion, choreography, instruments,
etc. began to have some similarities to k-pop styles. Some well-known artists are
Đàm vĩnh Hưng, Mỹ Tâm, Lam Trường, Hồ Ngọc hà, Ưng Hoàng Phúc, Đông
Nhi, …
Rock music originated as "rock and roll" in the United States in the 1950s, and
developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later. Rock usually uses
the electric guitar, electric bass guitar and drums. The well-known rock bands are
Eagles, Helloween, Coldplay…
US soldiers brought Rock and Roll into Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh city) when it
was the trend during the 1960s. Through times, Rock has gradually gained a

foothold in the mind of Vietnamese youngsters with the appearance of bands in
different periods Gạc tàn đầy, Bức tường, and Microwave.
****Jazz is a type of music which was invented in the United States. It is a
combination between African-American and European music. Jazz has become
popular since the 1910s. There are several common jazz instruments including
saxophone, trumpet, piano, and drums.
Jazz appeared in Southern Vietnam before 1975 in American music clubs in
Saigon. Among the biggest Vietnamese jazz musicians, Quyen Van Minh and Tran
Manh Tuan are regarded as the pioneers, who makes significant contribution to the
development of jazz in our country.
The importance of music in our life.


Music is the Language of the Universe which enables all individuals to
comprehend by their hearts.
Music can create your moods and trigger your emotions.
Music plays an essential role in motivating everything to grow. .
Music shelters the wounded soul and heals the broken heart.
Music is a way of expressing what words cannot.
Therefore, with all the undeniable roles, music has always been indispensable in
our daily life. Without music, human’s life would be different in a negative way.
Music helps us go through difficulties and troubles. Moreover, it teaches us to
realize and treasure the value of our life, which accounts for explaining why music
is so important to each of us.
