TEACHER’S NOTES

ASSESSMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

Before applying the assessments, gather the following items:






a copy of the assessment for each child
a box of crayons in a variety of colors
a pencil, an eraser, and a pen
paint and a paintbrush (Unit 1); a pencil case (Unit 3); a teddy bear and a book (Unit 5)
a list of the children to be assessed


While completing the assessments, follow these steps:







Separate the children into small groups.
Provide the children with safe activities, such as playing with playdough or plastic blocks.
Play the instrumental version of the Bebop Storysong from the unit you are assessing.
Sit at a table or desk with an extra chair for the child that is being assessed.
Invite the first child on the list to sit next to you at the table or desk.
Ask the child to complete the following tasks according to the unit being assessed.

Take a red crayon and color the backpack.
Take a green crayon and color the pencil case.

Find and paint a circle around number 11.

Pretend to listen and look.


• While the child is doing the activities and following the instructions that you are giving, fill in the
assessment chart by putting a check mark (✓) in the box that reflects the child’s ability in each skill.

After assessing each child, complete the following tasks:





Congratulate the child’s effort.
Put a stamp or sticker on the copy of the assessment to encourage the child’s progress.
Add suggestions for practicing or developing a skill in the “Next steps” column.
Keep the assessment in a portfolio as evidence of the child’s progress in each unit and to refer to when
planning lessons.
