How to make friends
There’s nothing wrong with enjoying your own

company but if you want to make new friends, here
are some suggestions:
1 b Join a club or a sports team: you don’t need to
be good at sports to enjoy doing it.
2
The internet can be a great place to make
friends. You can find people all over the world who
share your interests. But be careful – not every
person online is who they say they are.
3
You can talk to anybody – the person next
to you on the bus or at the supermarket checkout.
Make a comment about the weather or a request like
‘Can you tell me if the bus stops near the station?’
Then go on from there. Once in a while, you could
make a friend!
4
When you talk to people, smile or say
something nice about their hair or clothes. Show an
interest in them.
5
This gives you the chance to get to know a
person better. Give them your phone number or
email address if you like them.
6
If they don’t get in touch with you, don’t
worry. It doesn’t mean they don’t want to be friends
with you. It takes time to make a friend.
a) Be friendly.
b) Don’t stay at home.

c) Talk to people.
d) Don’t put pressure on people.
e) Go online.
f) Invite them for lunch or a coffee.
10

9 Read the article again. Are the statements true
(T) or false (F)?
1 You have to be good at sport to enjoy it. F
2 You can never be sure who you’re talking to on
the internet.
3 You can occasionally make friends when you talk
to people on a bus.
4 People don’t like it when you are interested in
them.
5 You shouldn’t invite people you don’t know very
well for a coffee.
6 You should phone or email your new friends all
the time.
