Contractions are usually pronoun + auxiliary verb. They are shortened in spoken English because they are usually
unstressed function words. Other common contractions include: “there is” Î “there’s”, negative modal contractions,
e.g. “cannot” Î “can’t”, question contractions, e.g. “what is?” Î “what’s?”, and names, e.g. “Rob is” Î “Rob’s”, etc.
