Lead poisoning in children is a major health concern. Both low and high does of paint
can have serious effects. Children exposed to high doses of lead often suffer permanent
nerve damage, mental retardation, blindness, and even death. Low doses of lead can lead
to mild mental retardation, short attention spans, distractibility, poor academic
performance, and behavioural problems.
This is not a new concern. As early as 1904, lead poisoning in children was linked to
lead-based paint. Microscopic lead particles from paint are absorbed into the bloodstream
when children ingest flakes of chipped paint, plaster, or paint dust from sanding. Lead
can also enter the body through household dust, nail biting, thumb sucking, or chewing
on toys and other objects painted with lead-based paint. Although American paint
companies today must comply with strict regulations regarding the amount of lead used
in their paint, this source of lead poisoning is still the most common and most dangerous.
Children living in older, dilapidated houses are particularly at risk.

There are three theories to the wild ancestor of the dog; the first is that it was wolf

only, the second is that it was wolf with a later admixture of jackal, and the third is that
the domestic dog may have been derived from a wild species that has since disappeared
from the face of the earth. A fourth theory might be that of Charles Darwin, that “the
domestic dogs of the world have descended from two good species of wolf (Canis Lupus
and Canis Latrans), and from two or three doubtful species of wolves (namely, the
European, Indian, and North African forms), from at least one or two south American
canine species, from several races or species of Jackal, and perhaps from one or more
extinct species”.

Of the three leading contributors to heart disease, only high blood cholesterol can be
controlled by change of diet. This fact is important in view of the estimate that over 150
million Americans have excessive levels of cholesterol in their bloodstreams.
Cholesterol, a waxy substance found in animal tissues, helps to form hormones, and to
maintain the structure of cells. Most cholesterol is manufactured by the body, but some
surplus quantities enter the blood through food intake. Foods heavy in saturated fats, such
as beef, butter, and whole milk, increase the natural level of cholesterol in the body.
Problems occur when fatty compounds build up on the walls of arteries. The deposits
gradually narrow blood vessels, and at 9ome point the flow of blood to the heart or brain
can be blocked. A clot that blocks an artery to the brain can cause a stroke, while one that
blocks an artery to the heart can cause a coronary attack.

A. from eating foods rich in saturated fats
B. From increasing overall food intake
C. From failing to check blood pressure
D. From hormonal imbalances

A. detach

B. accumulate

C. combine

D. dissipate

Jules is now in his sixties, and is one of the many homeless people who live on the
streets; he buys a newspaper most days. Today, with his fellow tramps, he reads about
yesterday’s student demonstrations.
Like many of the tramps who live under the bridges in Paris, Jules was not always so
poor. A long time ago he was in the Navy, and like many who have been to sea for a long
time, he has stayed slim and fit. Despite the strict organization on board ship, he loved

the life, and had the opportunity to see many countries. He visited Poland and Russia; in
South Africa he realized what he valued in each country was the people he met. He was
always astonished and delighted by the ways in which the people he met differed from
one country to another. Some day, he hopes, everyone will see the world as he does.
After many happy years in the Navy, he had to retire. The good things in life always
come to an end. His mother and father had long since died and he’d lost touch with his
other relatives. He came to Paris and became an industrial designer. He was happy,
although it wasn’t the same as the sea. He never wanted to get married and have children.
And then there was the period of darkness. He smiles sadly He shrugs his shoulders
and looks at his hands. There are tears in the corners of his eyes. This is something that
he cannot bring himself to talk about. “It all went wrong,” he whispers.
He was silent for a minute, then recovered. He began to talk more loudly. “Look at me

Probably the most important factor governing the severity of forest fires is weather.
Hot, dry weather lowers the moisture content of fuels. Once a fire has started, wind is
extremely critical because it influences the oxygen supply and the rate of spread. Forest
type and forest conditions are also important factors. For example, fire is more likely to
occur in conifers than in hardwoods; slash-covered or bushy areas are especially
hazardous because the rate at which combustion consumes fuel is proportional to fuel
volume and surface area.
Some fires are caused by lightning; others are caused by people. Those caused by
people may be accidental or intentional (incendiary). The causes of fire in the United
States show large regional differences. In the Rocky Mountains more than 70 percent of
the fires are caused by lightning, whereas incendiary fires amount to only about 1
percent. In contrast, more than 40 percent of the fires in the South are incendiary, whereas
lightning causes only 1 percent.

By far the most common snake in Britain is the adder. In Scotland, in fact, there are
no other snakes at all. The adder is also the only British snake with a poisonous bite. It
can be found almost anywhere, but prefers sunny hillsides and rough open country,
including high ground. In Ireland there are no snakes at all.
Most people regard snake bites as a fatal misfortune, but not all bites are serious, and
very few are fatal. Sometimes attempts at emergency treatment turn out to be more
dangerous than the bite itself, with amateur heroically, but mistakenly, trying do-ityourself surgery and other unnecessary measures.
All snakes have small teeth, so it follows that all snakes can bite, but only the bite of

the adder presents any danger. British snakes are shy animals and are far more frightened
of you than you could possibly be of them. The adder will attack only if it feels
threatened, as can happen if you take it by surprise and step on it accidentally, or if you
try to catch it or pick it up, which it dislikes intensely. If it hears you coming, it will
normally get out of the way as quickly as it can, but adders cannot move very rapidly and
may attack before moving if you are very close.
The effect of a bite varies considerably. It depends upon several things, one of which
is the body-weight of the person bitten. The bigger the person, the less harmful the bite is
likely to be, which is why children suffer far more seriously from snake bites than adults.
A healthy person will also have better resistance against the poison.
Very few people actually die from snake bites in Britain, and though these bites can
make some people very ill, there are probably just as many cases of bites having little or
no effects, as there are of serious illnesses.
1. Adders are most likely to be found _______.
A. in wilder parts of Britain and Ireland
B. in Scotland and nowhere else
C. on uncultivated land throughout Britain
D. in shady fields in England

A. try to catch the adder

B. make no attempt to treat the bite

D. operate as soon as possible

3. We are told that adders are _______.
A. normally friendly towards people
B. unlikely to bite except in self-defence
C. aggressive towards anyone in their territory
D. not afraid of human beings
4. If an adder hears you approaching, it will usually _______.
A. move out of your path

B. take no notice of you at all

C. disappear very quickly

D. wait until you are close then attack

5. We are told that in general British people think snakes are _______.
A. ‘not very common in Britain
B. usually harmless
C. more dangerous than they usually are
D. unlikely to kill people by their bite

Barbara Tuchman was an American Pulitzer Prize-winning historian who knew how
to stand out from the crowd. Author of books such as The First Salute, her bestselling
account of the American Revolution, Tuchman had a special talent for making history
appealing to common people. Unlike other published historians, Tuchman did not limit
herself to a dry retelling of facts. Her prose skillfully combined scholarly treatment with
high drama.
Tuchman also distinguished herself by declining to pursue a doctorate degree, which
won her the disrespect of many of her mainstream colleagues. To them, the lack of
advanced training made her books suspect as literary works and teaching tools. A few
others, however, maintained that her art of historical investigation might actually have
suffered if she had acquired a Ph.D. degree. They point to the boring efforts of historians
whose works, for the most part, lie buried on library shelves. Tuchman, on the other
hand, succeeded in bringing history to the attention of the masses.

ATLANTIC COLLEGE
Last week I went to visit Atlantic College, an excellent private college in Wales.
Unusually, it gives young people much needed experience of life outside the classroom,
as well as the opportunity to study for their exams. The students, who are aged between
16 and 18 and come from all over the world, spend the morning studying. In the
afternoon they go out and do a really useful activity, such as helping on the farm, looking
after people with learning difficulties, or checking for pollution in rivers.
One of the great things about Atlantic College students is that they come from many
different social backgrounds and countries. As few can afford the fee of £20,000 over two
years, grants are available. A quarter of the students are British, and many of those can
only attend because they receive government help.
“I really admire the college for trying to encourage international understanding among

young people”, as Barbara Molenkamp, a student from the Netherlands, said “You learn
to live with people and respect them, even the ones you don’t like. During the summer
holidays my mother couldn’t believe how much less I argued with my sister.”
To sum up, Atlantic College gives its students an excellent education, using methods
which really seem to work.
