As computers have become powerful tools for the rapid and economic production of
pictures, computer graphics has emerged as one of the most rapidly growing fields in
computer science. It is used routinely in such diverse areas as business, industry, art,
government, education, research, training, and medicine.
One of the initial uses of computer graphics, and ultimately its greatest use, has been
as an aid to design, generally referred to as computer-aided design (CAD). One of its
greatest advantages is that designers can see how an object will look after construction
and make changes freely and much more quickly than with hand drafting. For threedimensional rendering of machine parts, engineers now rely heavily on CAD.
Automobile, spacecraft, aerospace, and ship designers use CAD techniques to design
vehicles and test their performance. Building designs are also created with computer
graphics systems. Architects can design a building layout, create a three- dimensional
model, and even go for a simulated “walk” through the rooms or around the outside of
the building.
Business graphics is another rapidly growing area of computer graphics, where it is
used to create graphs, charts, and cost models to summarize financial, statistical,
mathematical, scientific, and economic data. As an educational aid, computer graphics
can be use to create weather maps and cartographic materials. Computer art also has
creative and commercial art applications, where it is used in advertising, publishing, and
film productions, particularly for computer animation, which is achieved by a sequential
process.

Cavemen who roamed the earth centuries ago must have thought it strange that the

moon had many different shapes. Sometimes it appeared as a thin white curve, sometimes
as a half circle, and at other times as a huge orange disc. How must they have explained
the moon’s curious behaviour? Today, of course, we know why our satellite appears to
have many shapes.
Once a month the moon travels in a complete circle around the earth. And as it moves
in its circle it seems to change shape. This is because we on earth see only that section of
the moon that catches the sun’s light.
When the sun, the moon, and the earth are in a straight line - with the moon in the
middle - we don’t see the moon at all. At this point, the moon is said to be new. We are
unable to see it in this position because the side facing the earth is in shadow. As the new
moon begins to circle the earth, however, we begin to see that part of its surface that
catches the sun’s light. After some days it reaches the position where we can see a half
moon. When it moves further around to the position where the earth is between the sun
and the moon, we see the full moon. Later it again becomes a half moon, becoming
smaller and smaller, until it disappears again to become the new moon. This cycle takes
twenty-eight days, or a “month”.

If the cavemen had known these simple facts which explain how and why the moon
“changes”, they probably would have saved themselves much unhappiness. They could
have enjoyed the beauty of the moon instead of fearing it each time it “went out” and
seemed uncertain to reappear.

What is life like for today’s students? As the university and college terms began, I
talked to a few students about their lives.

Sarah James is a second year biology student. “ Money is a big problem,” said Sarah.
“I can eat quite cheaply at the university, but I spend quite a lot on transport. I also spend
quite a lot on clothes, as I like to wear things that are in fashion.”
Collin Peters, who is studying engineering, disagrees. “I don’t spend anything on
clothes,” he said, “ unless you count climbing boots. I’m very keen on climbing, and you
do need special equipment, some of which is very expensive. Luckily, my parents gave
me money for my birthday in November. Not much of my money goes on transport,
because I have a bicycle.”
Diana Bell is a first year fashion student. “I make all my own clothes. This should
save me money, but in fact, the materials are very expensive. I don’t know how I would
manage if I didn’t sell some of the dresses and hats I make to the other students.
Everything is expensive,” she said. “That includes the rent, food, transport and heating
for the flat in winter.’’
Jack is a science student in his final year. “What do I spend my money on? Well. Not
on clothes, and not a lot on going out in the evening. My rent is expensive, and I suppose
I spend quite a lot on books.”
1. This is from _______
A. a student’s notebook.

Whether one is awake or asleep, the brain emits electrical waves. During wakefulness,
the waves are recorded at about ten small waves per second. With the onset of sleep, the
waves become larger and slower. The largest, slowest waves occur during the first three
hours of sleep. Mental activity slows down but does not stop. In fact, if awakened from
slow-wave sleep, a person can often remember vague thoughts that occurred during that
period of sleep.
During sleep, intervals of small, fast waves also occur. These waves are similar to
those experienced while awake. The eyes move rapidly, and it appears to the observer
that the sleeper is watching some event. Sleepers who are awakened during this rapideye-movement sleep will often recall the details of dreams they have been having. Sleep
of this kind is called dreaming sleep or rapid-eye-movement sleep, also known as REM
sleep.

In a period of eight hours, most sleepers experience from three to five instances of REM
sleep. Each instance lasts from five to thirty minutes with an interval of at least ninety
minutes between each one. Later instances of REM sleep are usually of longer duration
than are instances earlier in the eight-hour period.
People who suffer sleep deprivation experience fatigue, irritability, and loss of
concentration. Sleep is essential because it regenerates the brain and the nervous system.
Slow-wave sleep may be especially helpful in restoring muscle control, whereas REM
sleep may be more important for mental activity. It appears that both kinds of sleep are
necessary and the recuperation of sleep of one kind will not compensate for a lack of the

other kind of sleep.
1. What is the author’s main purpose in the passage?
A. To describe REM sleep
B. To explain sleep deprivation
C. To discuss the two types of sleep
D. To recommend an increase in the number of hours of sleep
2. How many times per night do most sleepers experience REM sleep?
A. Eight

B. Three to five

C. Five to thirty

D. Ninety

3. The author mentions all the following as characteristics of REM sleep EXCEPT
_______.
A. vague thoughts

B. smaller brain waves

C. eye movements

D. dreams

4. The word “vague” in line 5 could best be replaced by _______.
A. familiar

B. indefinite

C. unpleasant

D. detailed

5. It can be inferred from the passage that students who are writing term papers
_______.
A. require slow wave sleep to increase mental activity
B. can stay up all night working and recover the sleep they need by sleeping for a few
hours the next afternoon
C. need REM sleep to restore mental functioning
D. do not need as much sleep because of the heightened brain waves involved in
creative activity.

Bulbs are ideal for new gardeners, including children, because they are easy to plant
and they always flower well in their first season. They need comparatively little attention,
provided that the soil has been properly prepared, and the place where they are planted is
chosen with care. They will last for many years and give you an annual show of flowers
that are often so richly coloured or beautifully formed as to be in a class apart from other
garden flowers.

However, it is a mistake to buy bulbs without any plan of what effect you really want
from them. I have written this book to help in selecting the most suitable bulbs for the
typical. Small, modern garden of the non-specialist gardener, and have made some
suggestions to help readers who may not have had a garden before.
Too many books for beginners tell new gardeners to grow a few ‘sensible’ kinds of
plants and leave the more interesting kinds to adventurous experts. For the first few years
of one’s gardening life one should, it seems, concentrate on learning simple techniques
while admiring the gardens of more experienced neighbours.
In fact as a learner-gardener you need not fear that your efforts will necessarily show
your inexperience, because (and here I give away a most closely-guarded secret),
provided the bulbs come from a really reliable source, it is possible to produce as good
results in your first year of gardening as in your eightieth. There are some difficult bulbs
that will disappoint you, notably some lilies and a few miniature daffodils, but these are
often no more attractive than the really easy ones. Therefore, be bold with bulbs; they are
a sound investment for any garden.
Never be content to plant the bulbs by themselves. The majority look best when
planted among other kinds of plants, because they have unattractive leaves which are thus
hidden. There are a few bulbs, such as standard daffodils, which are, however, at their
best grown in short grass.
1. Why should new gardeners try growing bulbs?
A. They are cheap, so a great many can be grown.
B. Once planted, little after-care is needed.
C. They will grow anywhere in the garden.
D. Their flowers get better and better each year.
2 What is this book on gardening about?
A. Planning an easily maintained garden.
B. Up-to-date information on-new bulbs.
C. General advice for beginner gardeners.

D. The choice of bulbs for small gardens.

3. Inexperienced gardeners are often told that they should _______
A. experiment with different plants.
B. ask their experienced neighbours for advice.
C. learn by visiting other gardens.
D. plant only a few types of plants.
4. Bulbs are described as an investment because _______.
A. they go on flowering all summer.
B. they flower year after year.
C. the beginner can learn from them.
D- they make other plants look good.
5. Some lilies and miniature daffodils are different from other bulbs because they are
_______.
A. particularly attractive in colour.

B. difficult to grow successfully.

C. disappointing when they flower.

D. rare and very eye-catching.

FREE STRESS SEMINAR
Stress is with us all the time. It comes from mental or emotional activity as well as
physical activity. It is unique and personal to each of us. So personal, in fact, that what
may be relaxing to one person may be stressful to another. For example, if you’re a busy
executive who likes to keep occupied all of the time, “taking it easy” at the beach on a
beautiful day may feel extremely frustrating, nonproductive, and upsetting. You may be

emotionally distressed from “doing nothing”. Too much emotional stress can cause
physical illnesses such as high blood pressure, ulcers, or even heart disease. Physical
stress from work or exercise is not likely to cause such ailments. The truth is that physical
exercise can help you to relax and to better handle your mental or emotional stress.
1. Which of the following would be a determinant as to what people find stressful?
A. Personality

B. Education

C. Marital status

2. Stress is _______.
A. optional

B. relaxing

D. Shoe size

C. manageable

D. the same for all people

3. A source of stress NOT specifically mentioned in this passage is _______
A. educational activity

B. physical activity

C. mental activity

D. emotional activity

4. Physical problems caused by emotional stress can appear as all of the following
EXCEPT _______.
A. Ulcers

B. pregnancy

C. heart disease

D. high blood pressure

5. One method mentioned to help handle stress is _______
A. physical exercise

B. tranquilizers

C. drugs

D. taking it easy

In 1976 one survey revealed that there were less than 3,000 bald eagles in the lower
48 states, the mainland of the U.S.A. By 1984 another survey, an incomplete midwinter
one, put the number at almost 12,000 bald eagles in those same states.
The eagle, America’s national symbol, had been shot and poisoned and deprived of its
living space. Another reason for its decline is its nesting habits. Bald eagles do not breed
until they are 3 to 5 years old, then they normally produce only two eggs per year. The
eagle of ten returns each year to the same nest so preservation of nesting areas is vitally
important.

Congress took action to protect the eagle in 1972, criminal penalties for a bald eagle
may be as much as a $ 20,000 fine and one year in prison. Healthy eagle eggs have also
been transplanted from unpolluted areas to other ones where eggshells are very thin, and
young birds with a high rate have been brought in from Canada.
1. Which of these sentences is the best restatement of the first sentence?
A. All the states apart from Alaska and Hawaii had less than 3,000 bald eagles in
1976.
B. According to one survey, which came out in 1976, fewer than 3,000 bald eagles
were surviving in the mainland of the U.S.A.

C. In 1976 the lower 48 states of the U.S.A. had less than 3,000 bald eagles,
according to a mainland survey.
D. Fewer than 3,000 bald eagles were living in the mainland of the U.S.A. in the year
up to 1976, one survey revealed.
2. According to the author, _______
A. the 1984 survey of bald eagles was not as the earlier one.
B. the lower 48 states of the U.S.A. published another survey of bald eagles in 1983.
C. another mid-winter survey of bald eagles was published in 1984
D. the results of the two surveys of bald eagles were contradictory.
3. The author does not state that many eagles died because _______
A. they were shot

B. they were poisoned

C. they had insufficient living space D. preservation efforts were inadequate.
4. One reason for the bald eagle’s low number is _______
A. its early breeding period
B. the small number of eagles it produces every year
C. that it only nests in preservation areas

D. the fact that it returns to similar nesting areas every year.
5. If you kill a bald eagle, your maximum penalty is _______
A. to be sent to prison or to receive a large fine.
B. to be sent to prison and to receive a large fine.
C. to receive a large fine whilst serving a prison sentence.
D. to be taken to Congress to receive a criminal penalty.

FOOTPRINTS ON THE MOON
Long ago a lot of people thought the moon was a god. Other people thought it was
just a light in the sky. And others thought it was a big ball of cheese.
Then telescopes were made. And men saw that the moon was really another world.
They wondered what it was like. They dreamed of going there. On July 20, 1969, that
dream came true. Two American men landed on the moon. Their names were Neil

Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin.
The first thing the men found was that the moon is covered with dust. The dust is so
thick that the men left footprints where they walked. Those were the first marks a living
thing has ever made on the moon. And they could stay there for years and years. There is
no wind or rain to wipe them off.
The two men walked on the moon for hours. They picked up rocks to bring back to
earth for study. They dug up dirt to bring back. They set up machines to find out things
people wanted to know. Then they climbed back into their moon landing craft.
Next day the landing craft roared as the two men took off from the moon. They joined
Michael Collins in the spaceship that waited for them above the moon. Then they were
off on their long trip back to earth.
Behind them they left the plains and tall mountains of the moon. They left the
machines they had set up.
And they left footprints that may last forever.
1. This story tells _______

A. about the first men to walk on the moon.
B. how men found footprints on the moon.
C. what the men brought back from their trip to the moon.
D. who had left footprints on the moon before the two men landed there.
2. A telescope _______
A. makes balls of light seem brighter.
B. turns the moon into another world.
C. makes many of men’s dreams come true.
D. makes faraway things seem closer.
3. The men brought rocks and dirt from the moon because _______.
A. they wanted something to show they were there.
B. people wanted to use them to learn about the moon.
C. they wanted to keep them as souvenirs.
D. they might sell them to scientists.

4. The Americans’ machines will most likely stay on the moon until _______
A. someone takes them away.
B. a storm covers them with dust.
C. rain and wind destroy them.
D. they become rusty and break to pieces.
5. The next people who go to the moon most likely could _______
A. find that the machines have disappeared.
B. leave the first set of footprints on the moon.
C. find the places where Armstrong and Aldrin walked.
D. find that dust has wiped off the two men’s footprints.
