Saint Patrick’s Day
Saint Patrick’s Day is a holiday that began in
Ireland. Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland
but he was not Irish. He was born in England and
he went to Ireland to work as a missionary and
teach Christianity to the Irish.
Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th
because it is the day that Saint Patrick died. This
day is an important religious holiday in Ireland. It is also celebrated in
other parts of the world, but it is not very serious. In
England, the United States, Canada, and Australia,
people wear green and celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day with
parades. In the city of Chicago, the river is dyed green
on Saint Patrick’s Day! People all around the world who
aren’t Irish like to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day because it is a lot of fun!
People wear shamrocks on Saint Patrick’s Day because it is the symbol
of Saint Patrick. A shamrock is a small green plant with three leaves.
Sometimes people wear green hats to look like
leprechauns. A leprechaun is a small fairy that Irish
people tell stories about. They believe that
leprechauns live at the end of the rainbow, and each
leprechaun has a pot of gold. If you catch a
leprechaun, you will get to keep his gold!
On March 17th, don’t forget to say:

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!
