An R’n’B Star from the Carribean
Rihanna’s life has been like a fairy tale. Born in 1998 in Barbados, an island in the Carribean, she
has always loved performing. In 2004, at only 16 years old, she performed in the school show
and won the school beauty pageant. She knew she wanted to be a singer. “Growing up, I always
sang”, she says. “It was something I wanted to do. I developed a passion for it, fell in love with
music and developed my own taste and style.”

A star is born !
The same year, Rihanna was spotted by music producer
Evan Rodgers, who was on holiday in Barbados. He was
very impressed by Rihanna’s talent and took her to New
York to record some songs. It was the first time Rihanna
had left Barbados. “It was a little scary to have no friends
or family,” she says.
Jay-Z, the hip hop artist, heard the recordings and liked
them. He signed Rihanna to a six-album contract with Def
Jam Records.

Good Girl Gone Bad
After her successful albums, Music of the Sun and A Girl
Like Me, Rihanna has recently released Good Girl Gone
Bad. It is very different from her other albums, and fans
might be surprised by what they hear.
“My sound has really changed. I sing about different
things, and it’s a lot sexier”, Rihanna says.

An actress and a model
Rihanna isn’t just a singer - she’s a model and an actress too ! In 2006, she was in the film about high school cheerleading, Bring it on : All or
nothing, and she was also in an American TV series and drama.
Rihanna has also recently made a series of advertisements for make-up to coincide with the release of her album. Her beauty and musical
talents are a perfect combination - we can see everywhere now !
