country from the Apartheid system.
He played part in numerous
demonstrations against the white-ruled
government.
In 1964 he was sentenced to life in prison.
• His sentence was to silence him once and
for all.
• In 1990, after 27 years of imprisonment, h
was freed.
• Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace
Prize and elected president of South Africa

Thanks to the self-sacrifice of Nelson
Mandela,
apartheid has been
outlawed.
Now everyone in South Africa has equal

opportunities to live comfortable,
productive lives.
