THE STORY OF THE LITTLE DUCK AND THE
RUBBER TOY
There was a little duck bathing in the bathtub one evening. She was playing with a
rubber human doll.
Suddenly, a mosquito flew by and landed on the doll’s head. Then the mosquito bit a
hole into the doll, because it thought the doll was a real human.
All the air escaped quickly, and the little duck could do nothing about it.
When the duck saw this, she started to weep. Mother duck heard her crying, so she
came in from the kitchen.
She saw what happened. She wanted to help so she started to think.
Suddenly, she had an idea. She went back into the kitchen. Then she came back and
blew up the rubber toy. Then she put a tape on its head. The little duck was still
weeping.
But when she saw that the rubber toy was full of air again, she stopped crying and

was happy again. ”Thank you, mother,” she said.

Notes for teachers
Students have to tell the story (several times) using the story cues provided in the
worksheet. This is a "Grammar up!" task where students add the past tense, articles,
plurals, conjuntions, etc. to the story. The repetition helps students slowly start to
focus on the grammar besides the content of the story. It worked for me across various
levels up to intermediate. When I want to impress a prospective new client, I often do
this task because it results in a strong sense of learning by virtue of students' speaking
production improving upon each repetition. Bless up, Kisdobos
