The sentence

These compound nouns are in affirmative
sentences.
e.g.: I know something about my birthday
present.
You can use ‘some’ in questions if you expect
a positive answer.
e.g.: Can you give me something to drink?

The sentence

These compound nouns are in questions and
negative sentences
or in sentences with one of these words: without,
neither, none, no, nor, never, seldom, rarely, hardly,
to deny, to refuse, to doubt …
Using not … any+… we don’t emphasize. It is a
neutral sentence.
e.g.: I don’t know anything about the excursion.
You can use ‘any’ in affirmative statements with a
different meaning.

With these compound nouns
become the sentence negative.
Using these compound nouns you
express
more
emphatically

what you want to say, maybe in
a defensive way.
e.g.: I knew nothing about

can use somebody instead of
someone, anybody instead of anyone
or nobody instead of no one.
