Should government spend money on highways or public
transportation?
Transportation is one of the major fields that governments need to
invest. When some one thinks that the governments should spend
more money on improving roads and highways, I strongly
suggest that more money be invested on improving public
transportation.
Nevertheless, I do admit that money spent on roads and highways
will benefit a lot. For those people who have cars, traveling will be
easier and more convenient, since they will have more choices and
it will take less time on the roads. Even public transportation will
benefit from it since buses can utilize these roads and highways too.
However, what about those people who do not own a car?
Definitely they rely on the public transportation and more
investment on roads and highways will not directly do them good.
What they really need is better public transportation systems,
which in most cities are over-crowded and need more money.
Furthermore, from the point of view of environmental protection,
investing more money on public transportation is better than on
roads and highways. In the latter case, more people will be
encouraged to buy cars and there will be more air pollution and
noises. On the contrary, a better public transportation system will
produce less pollution. When more people are attracted to the public
transportation, provided it is better than it is today due to enough
funds, the pollution will be reduced even further.
In conclusion, although I do not deny the benefits of better roads and
highways, I think it is better for governments to spend more money on
public transportation, since it will do good to us in the foreseeable
future and in a long term.
