The is used before singular and plural nouns, both countable and uncountable when we are
talking about something specific or when the noun is mentioned for a second time.
We use the with the words cinema, theatre, radio, countryside, seaside, beach, …
We use the before a singular countable noun to represent a class of people, animals or
things.
The is also used before:
1. nouns which are unique
2. names of cinemas, hotels, theatres, museums, newspapers, ships
3. names of rivers, seas, groups of islands, states, mountain ranges, deserts, oceans,
and names with…of
4. musical instruments
5. names of people, families, nationalities in the plural
6. titles without proper names
7. adjectives used as proper nouns and the superlative degree of adjectives or adverbs
The is omitted before:
1. proper nouns
2. names of sports, activities, colours, substances and meals
3. names of countries, cities, streets, parks, mountains, islands, lakes, continents
4. titles with proper names
5. bed, school, church, hospital, prison, when they are used for the reason they exist.
BUT: His sister went to the prison to visit him last month.
