Read the following text from an article in the sports section of a newspaper and mark the letter A, B, C or D
on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 21 to 25.
The Olympic Games have demonstrated Catalan pride, Greek history and Australian culture to the world,
but the Beijing Games will be a more cosmic harbinger of where the world is going in the next century or
three. Take pollution, for example. During try-outs recently, a stinging mass of what could be vaguely
described as air covered Beijing, much to the chagrin of the proud organisers. We usually encounter doom

and gloom before every Olympics, fears of terrorism or gridlock, but this time it is the dark cloud of
pollution. Beijing will ban specified vehicles on certain days, but with millions of car s in Beijing, how will
people get around? By buses, authorities say. New Yorkers who have been doused with bus exhaust in our
narrow canyons may already be laughing derisively. Good luck with that.

Yet there is a tremendous upside to these Games: the exposure to modern China, including the Olympic
architecture. Next summer there will be swimming finals in Beijing's National Aquatics Centre. Next door is
the main Olympic stadium, nicknamed the Bird’s Nest because of the steel twig-like prongs woven together.
To promote traditional feng shui balance between fire and water, the venues were placed side by side.
“China Is Near.” This 1967 Italian film shows China as a symbol of the mysterious, the powerful, the
future looming over everybody. Lately, that title has been looping across the movie screen of my mind. As
the most populous nation in the world, China is using these Games to build and advertise itself to the world.
Everybody who has been to Beijing says the Chinese will be excellent hosts, providing water, food,
accommodations, language skills and entertainment. This is too important to botch.
21. What is the main point of the first paragraph?
A. Each host country has a theme to their Olympics.
B. Pollution will be a problem during the Beijing games.
C. The Beijing Games will be an indication of where the world is headed.
D. The organisers are satisfied with how plans for the Beijing Games are going.
22. What is the “doom and gloom” concern about the Beijing games?
A. gridlock
B. pollution
C. terrorism
D. traffic

23. What does the author feel would be the reaction of New Yorkers about using buses instead of cars?
A. congratulatory
B. dismay
C. hilarity
D. sarcasm
24. Why are the swimming pools next to the stadium?
A. It assists fire prevention.
C. It exhibits their unusual architecture.
B. It displays harmony.
D. It shows they are interconnected.
25. Why does the film “China is Near” seem important to the author?
A. China has the world’s largest population.
C. China is shown to be hostile.
B. China is both enigmatic and strong.
D. China will be a good Olympic host.

Read the following text from an article in a science magazine and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your
answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 31 to 35.
Two species of the tiniest rodent are attracting considerable attention from the scientific community. It is
emerging that there are two types of very different male voles: the attentive, faithful prairie vole and the Don
Juan of voles, the meadow vole. The difference between the two that is currently engaging scientists lies not
so much in their species as in a single gene governing the brain's hormone chemistry. With less than five
percent of all mammals being monogamous, prairie voles are unusual for their kind. The males choose only
one female, protecting both her and their young, and helping to raise them to adulthood. Their cousin species
is more mainstream, having several mates and disregarding any responsibility towards their offspring.
The difference between such closely related species appears to be a hormone called vasopressin. Where
vasopressin receptors are present in the brain in large numbers, they facilitate pair-bonding. By implanting
additional receptors in meadow voles, scientists found that their behaviour changed and they became more
like their home-loving cousins. It is suggested that vasopressin acts as a reward system and is stimulated by
contact with a regular partner, thus promoting monogamy. There are also implications for human beings, not
so much in terms of fidelity, though of course there is ample demand for this, but more for the development
of social skills. One extreme case where social skills are highly underdeveloped is autism. It may be that
lack of vasopressin or its receptors could lead to social stimulus being ignored or misunderstood. It seems
that even the humble vole may help shed light on some of the most complex of human behaviour.

31. What is interesting scientists about voles?
A. New types of male voles are emerging.
C. There is genetic variance in male voles.

C. They mostly choose to have one mate.
B. They are unusually protective of their young.
D. They pay no attention to their mates.
33. What can be inferred about male prairie voles?

B. Scientists were able to change their behaviour.

C. It could improve their social skills.
B. It could help them stay at home more.
D. It could make them more faithful to their wives.
35. How has studying the vole helped increase understanding of autism?
