The mountains are beautiful, but they can be dangerous. Yesterday a bear
attacked a woman. The woman was walking on a trail with her friend. The trail
was in the mountains. Jenny was walking in front of Sue. They were walking uphill
on the mountain trail.
The bear jumped out of the bushes. It attacked Jenny. Jenny screamed.
Sue hit the bear with her backpack. The bear grabbed the backpack with its
mouth. It ran into the bushes with the backpack. Both women sat on the trail.
They were crying.
Jenny’s nose and ears were bleeding. About five minutes later, a man
walked up. He asked them what happened. He had a cell phone and dialled 911.
But his cell phone did not work in the mountains. He said he would get help. He
ran back down the trail.
Jenny was afraid to stay in the mountains. So was Sue. They got up and
slowly walked down the trail. They held hands. They did not say a word. They

Teacher Notes
The aim of this kind of reading exercise is to stimulate children’s imagination. Just
imagine for a minute comprehension questions such as:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

How old is he?
Where do they live?
What’s his address?
What does she do in her free time?
and so on…

I dare you to answer them and reflect on how you feel when doing so.
These kinds of questions are incredibly BORING!!!
So try something new, something students don’t expect. At first they’ll ask ‘Teacher,
what’s the correct answer, I can’t find it in the text?’
That’s right. Try to make them understand that they are free to answer whatever

they think could be right. After they have all finished, you could have a meaningful
discussion about why they chose these particular answers and turn the reading lesson
into some conversation practice.
I hope you all enjoy this approach to make reading more interesting.
