How to Write to a Penpal

The first letter doesn’t need to be too long. It is just a way to introduce
yourself and get the other person interested in writing back to you.

Tell them your name and how or where you found their name.

Say how old you are and where you live.

•

Talk briefly about your interests (what you like to do). Keep it fairly brief to
start with.

Tell them a little bit about your family (are you married, how many
children, do you have siblings ?). You don’t have to give very specific information.
As you get to know your penpal you might want to tell them more.

Ask a few questions – general questions about their hobbies or
interests are good. This gives them something to talk about when they reply.

You might want to talk about your pets. Animals can be a great common interest.

Always tell the truth.

•

Finish your letter in a way that leaves things open and invites a reply.
For example, “I look forward to getting to know you better and I hope to
hear from you soon”.

Sign off with something cheerful that promotes friendship, e.g. “Your friend” or
“Kind regards”

I am married and I have two children – a boy and a girl. They are both in
elementary school. Do you have any children?
I am looking forward to hearing from you and becoming friends.
