1. The term milkshake was first used in print in
1885. Milkshakes were an alcoholic whiskey drink at
first. By 1900, the term milkshake referred to
"wholesome drinks made with chocolate, strawberry,
or vanilla syrups." Nowadays we are lucky that we
can a good milkshake.
2. Egyptians created lemonade more than 1,500
years ago. This popular drink was called
“qatarmizat” and was consumed between the 10th
and 13th centuries. Today, lemonade is available in
bottles and can be clear, cloudy, or fizzy. Clear is

lemon and water, or lemon and carbonated water,
made without adding sugar.
3. Soft drinks can trace their history back to the
mineral water found in natural springs. In 1767, the
first drinkable, manmade glass of carbonated water
was created by Englishmen, Dr. Joseph Priestley.
Three years later, the Swedish chemist, Torbern
Bergman, invented a generating apparatus that
made carbonated water from chalk by the use of
sulfuric acid. Bergman's apparatus allowed imitation
mineral water to be produced in large amounts.
4. The official definition of a Cocktail according to
the modern Merriam-Webster Dictionary is "an iced
drink of wine or distilled liquor mixed with flavoring
ingredients." It reflects the modern practice of
referring to almost any mixed drink as a Cocktail.
The first published definition of the Cocktail
appeared in 1806.
5. Orange Juice is the best known and most popular
raw food drink. In the mid-1910s there was an
overproduction of citrus fruits in California and the
growers didn't see another option but to destroy
30% of its trees. At the same time, pasteurization
was discovered. Now, the growers of the citrus could
juice their oranges, pasteurize them for longer
storage and then ship the juice to the big cities.
6. Smoothies became popular in the middle 1960's.
One of the popular menu items in restaurants was
the fruit juice smoothie. California borrowed the
trend of fruit juice smoothie from its South American

neighbors.
7. The predecessor to the hot chocolate we enjoy
today was the Aztec drink xocoatl. Later Cortez
introduced the xocoatl drink to the court of Spanish
King Charles V. The Spanish had changed the name
of their new beverage to "chocolat."
