The history of slavery is very old. People often used other people as
slaves for various reasons. In many ancient civilisations like those of Ancient
Egypt, Greece or Rome, and olso in many places in Asia, Africa and America,
slavery was a usual situation.
This practice continued for years throughout the world. In America
especially, from the 16th to the 19th century, the slave trade was a very
successful business, bringing black people from Africa to work in the
plantations of the Southern States. African slaves worked in the plantations
to produce cotton, tobacco and sugar. Working conditions were usually very
hard and living conditions very poor. Also their masters often treated the
slaves cruelly, because to some of them a slave was nothing but an object.
After the American Civil War, slavery in the United States ended. Today no
country in the world accepts slavery.
