Philadelphia
From my point of view, Philadelphia is a film about
discrimination, prejudice and persecution. The story takes place in
Philadelphia, known as the city of brotherly love, which is quite ironic.
The main character, Andrew Beckett, is performed by Tom
Hanks. Beckett, a lawyer with a solid reputation, is also a homosexual,
suffering from the AIDS virus. When Beckett's bosses discover this,
they set Beckett up and fire him for neglect. Beckett knows what is
going on, and, as a lawyer, decides to take legal action against his former
bosses.
He knows it will not be an easy task, and the company he faces
is very powerful. However, he decides to try.
No lawyer wants to help Beckett, though, until he meets Joe Miller (Denzel Washington). At
first, even Miller refuses to help Beckett. But the fact that Washington's character is black allows
him to view the subject of discrimination with greater clarity. He discovers the two have much more
in common than just a job and so he changes his mind.
Concluding, I believe that Philadelphia is a very powerful and emotional drama. It displays
the strong prejudice held by society against homosexuals and people with AIDS.
