Oops, you’re in trouble! You went for a swim during your sailing cruise,
with no one else on board, but you forgot about the hungry sharks! Now
try to get back on board before the shark eats you. Your teacher will ask
you questions. One bad answer will get you one step closer to the
shark. One good answer and you move one step closer to the safety of
the boat. Good luck!

You can use this activity as a fun way to test your students’ knowledge of, say, words
from the previous lesson or you could have them decide on the correctness of


sentences you read out. I find that this imaginary scenario effectively raises the
stakes for students and is able to break the boredom of testing. I usually start with the
more difficult questions, so that in the end the questions get simpler and simpler,
whicih give students a better chance of “surviving.” Your goal is to keep up the game
long enough to test everything you want. So in case the questions are too difficult in
the beginning, which would cut the game short, just give students some helpful clues.
