The definite article is used:

 to speak about something which has already
been mentioned:
She has a ball. The ball is read. (ball – is
mentioned for the second time)
 when both the speaker and listener know what
is being talked about, even if it has not been
mentioned before:
Where is the vase? – It is in the living room. (the
speakers both know about what vase the are

talking)
 to speak about objects we regard as unique:
The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
 before seas, rivers, and groups of mountains
or islands:
the Caspian Sea, the Nile, the Rocky Mountains,
the British Isles etc.
 with superlatives and ordinal numerals:
This is the most interesting film.
Amy lives on the second floor.
 with musical instruments:
He plays the piano very well.
