From early November and
onwards Christmas moves in
on you more and more. It is
hard not to see that
Christmas is just around the
corner. Everywhere you look
you see lights decorating
houses and shops.
“Christmas trees” will be
decorated with lights and
ornaments in shopping malls
and streets. If you dare enter
a shopping mall you will soon
hear carols over the
loudspeakers. Groups of
people may be in the streets
singing carols to raise money
for charity. In December
shops stay open till late. Many
places of work will have a
Christmas party for the staff
during December and some
companies also give presents
to the employees.
During December many
homes will be decorated with
colored or white electric
lights. Just before Christmas
Eve people also bring a real
tree into their homes. They
decorate the tree with electric

lights and ornaments. In some
countries real candles replace
the electric lights.
Christmas cards also have to
be written. It is a nice
tradition that many people
enjoy. The better part may be
to receive some. The cards
are hung up on the walls, on a
string, put on the mantelpiece
or displayed in another nice
way.

The jolly old man with the long white beard, red
coat and bag of toy is awaited by most young
kids. He is believed to live on the North Pole with
his wife Mary and assistants called elves. The
elves help Santa in his workshop making toys
that will later be wrapped in paper and brought to
children all over the world. He arrives through the
sky on a sledge pulled by reindeer. He comes into
houses down the chimney at midnight and places
presents for the children in socks or bags by the
beds of children. He may also leave them in front
of the Christmas tree.
In shops someone will dress up as Father
Christmas and give small presents to children. He
may also ask them what gifts they want for
Christmas.
