In Britain and America Christmas Day (December 25th) is a family day and normally spent at home.
Preparations for Christmas usually start well in advance, with the sending of Christmas cards and the
putting up of decorated Christmas tree. These are usually put in the living room although some families put
them outside in the garden. This habit was popularized by Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, who
introduced the first Christmas tree from his native Germany in 1840.
Father Christmas, or Santa Claus, is an important part of the Christmas tradition. Each year he
receives thousands of letters at his home in Finland from children all over the world. Before going to bed
early on Christmas Eve (December 24th) most British and American children hang up a stocking which they

hope Father Christmas will fill with presents. Other gifts, or ‘Christmas boxes’ are bought and wrapped in
brightly coloured wrapping paper and then placed under the Christmas tree. These are opened on Christmas
morning. After a traditional Christmas dinner of roast turkey, many British families settle down and listen
to the Queen as she gives her traditional Christmas message on television.
