The word ENVIRONMENT means simply what is around us. Some people live in a town
environment; for others, their environment is the countryside. But the AIR we breathe, the SOIL
we stand on and walk, the WATER we drink are all part of the environment.
The most serious environmental problems are:

If we talk about water pollution we see lots of problems connected with it nowadays. As
you know there is no ocean or sea which is not used as a DUMP. The Pacific Ocean, especially,
has suffered from nuclear pollution because the French Government tests nuclear weapons there.
Many seas and oceans are used for dumping industrial WASTE from plants and factories also!
Britain alone dumps 250,000 tons of industrial waste into the North Sea. This poisons and kills
fish and sea animals which can be eaten by people. Rivers are poisoned too. There is not enough
oxygen in the water and living things leave their HABITATS or die.

There is much to talk about air pollution, because this problem is as important as the water
pollution to be solved. The main causes of air pollution are: EXHAUST FUMES from cars and
buses, wastes from nuclear power stations, factories, plants and so on. Nuclear pollution cannot
be seen but its EFFECTS can be terrible. Dust and wastes CAUSE ACID RAINS, which come
to the earth again. The most dangerous health problems that air pollution cause are breathing
problems, skin problems; because ULTROVIOLET RADIATION causes SKIN CANCER.
