Pubs are an important part of the life and culture in the UK. The word “pub” comes from
“public house.” In older times, the term signified someone’s house that had been opened
to the public. The owner is normally referred to as the landlord or landlady. He or she
often lives on the premises.

There is no table service in English pubs. You order and pay at the bar. The barman or
barmaid is very aware whose turn is next. If you are seated at a table, it is customary for
one of you to go to the bar on behalf of the entire table.
Food is ordered and paid for at the bar. The barman or barmaid, however, will bring food
to your table. Just leave your glasses or plates on the table when you are ready to leave.
There is no obligation to order anything alcoholic, you can even order tea or coffee. A
request for beer or lager will get you a full pint (474 ml) unless you specifically ask for a
half pint.
There is no tipping in an English pub!
Don’t drink and drive
You go to a pub in England. You sit down at a table, look at the menu and
then one of you goes up to the bar to order.
You:
Good afternoon, we’d like to order something to eat, but I’m
not sure I understand everything on the menu. Can you help
me?
Barman: Sure, what don’t you understand?
You:
What’s “Shepherd’s Pie”?
Barman: It’s minced meat and vegetables, covered with mashed potatoes
and baked in the oven.
You:
Oh, that sounds nice, I’ll try that.
Barman: Is that all?
You:
Well, no, my friend would like a Ploughman’s Lunch because
she’s a vegetarian, can you tell me what it consists of?
Barman: It’s a plate of cheese (you can choose between cheddar or
stilton – that’s blue cheese), pickle, bread and butter, it’s very
good and filling.
You:
Oh, I’m sure she’ll love that.
Barman: And what would you like to drink?
You:
A Carling lager and a glass of house red, please?
Barman: A pint or half a pint?
You:
Just half a pint please, I’m driving!
Barman: Here you are! I’ll bring the dishes over as soon as they’re ready,
but you’ll have to pay for them now.
You:
Oh, of course! Thank you.
