THE TALENT SHOW
Mrs. Smith’s fifth grade class was excited about the school talent show.
Three students from the class were performing. Abby was going to play the
piano, Morgan wanted to show everyone her new dance, and Tim was
going to tell jokes.
The day of the talent show arrived. The principal, Miss Turnbow, surprised
everyone by doing magic tricks. No one knew she was such a good
magician. Miss Turnbow pulled a coin out of someone’s ear. She turned a
chain of pretty scarves into colorful flowers, and then she pulled a real, live
rabbit out of a hat.
When she was finished, the students clapped. Some of them even yelled,
“Good job, Miss Turnbow, good job!”
The next person to perform was Abby. She played “Here Comes Santa
Claus” on the piano. Everyone thought playing a Christmas song in the
middle of May was strange, but they still clapped.
Morgan showed everyone her talent by doing a jazz dance. She made a
few mistakes, but the students still liked it.
It was Tim’s turn. Tim tried telling funny jokes, but no one laughed. He
tried and tried, but his jokes weren’t funny. Finally the time came for Tim to
leave the stage. When he did, he tripped on the microphone cord.
Everyone laughed so hard that Tim pretended to fall again. The students
laughed even more. Tim decided that if he were ever in a talent show
again, he wouldn’t tell jokes. He would just pretend to trip a lot instead.
