Gerunds
The gerund is the –ing form of a verb
and is used as a noun.
Example: Singing is one of my hobbies.
Smoking cigars gives him a headache.
Gary’s acting is splendid.
1. The gerund can also be used after these words:
begin
need
deny
detest bear
allow
escape
like
risk
enjoy
avoid
practise
imagine
miss
hate
finish
prevent
stop
defer
remember
go
come
mind
busy
worth
help
keep
prefer
can’t + verb
2. Gerunds after an adjective + a preposition
Ex: I am sick of eating the same food every day.
3. Gerund after verb + a preposition
Ex: He persisted in breaking the school rules.
4. Gerund may follow a possessive adjective or the possessive form of a noun.
Ex: I don’t remember his giving us any instructions.
He objected to Timmy’s joining us on the trip.
Exercise: Rewrite the following sentences using gerunds.
