Should students evaluate their teachers?
I strongly agree that students should be able to evaluate their
teachers. When done properly evaluation can have a positive
effect on teachers as well as students.
If a student is not satisfied with the way a certain teacher presents
his/hers class the student has an opportunity to express his/her point
of view and dissatisfaction about the class. Such technique allows
teachers to be more productive as well as it leads to a better
interaction between students and teachers. It also creates a perfect
environment for the
students to absorb a school material more efficiently. The students
can feel open and relaxed in the class, never hesitate to ask for help
and most importantly be treated equally. Being treated equally will
have a tremendous impact on a young student. He/she will realize
how important it is to take studies seriously. Moreover he/she will
want to learn more about a certain given subject which will enable
him/her to see wider aspects of a certain topic, and as a result it will
produce more qualified specialists for society.
However, there is a downside to such practice. It can become very
personal and get easily misused. The students have to remain
objective and be able to determine the difference between bad
teaching or simply being a lazy student. Teachers should not be held
responsible for the lack of personal discipline and rebellious
behavior. Interestingly enough there are still young individuals who
are not mature yet for the university life, and need some time to
grow up.
As I stated earlier I agree that teachers need to be evaluated, but the
process has to be fair and carefully examined before taking any
actions in order to show certain dissatisfaction.
