In the Thinking KAP activity, you described a series of steps that you
follow every day to meet the challenge of getting ready for your school
day. In this unit, you will learn a series of steps to meet the challenge of
the ACT Reading Test. You briefly saw the 3-Step Method for ACT Reading
Comprehension in Unit 1. In this unit, you will learn how to perform each
step of the method, beginning with the first.

Step 1: Read Actively
To get the most from each passage, you need to read actively.

Summarize Each Paragraph
The first part of Step 1 is to summarize each paragraph. Think of each
summary statement as a headline—it pulls together the details from the
paragraph into one central idea. It is important to record your summary
statements. When you go to answer the questions, your notes will serve as a
table of contents—they’ll show you where to look for the answers.
Read the first paragraph of a passage about England’s Sweet Track and
review the summary statement.

A

About 50 miles west of Stonehenge, buried in the peat bogs of the
Somerset flatlands in southwestern England, lies the oldest road known to
humanity. Dubbed the Sweet Track after its discoverer, Raymond Sweet, this
painstakingly constructed 1,800-meter road dates back to the early Neolithic
period, some 6,000 years ago. Thanks primarily to the overlying layer of
acidic peat, which has kept the wood moist, inhibited the growth of decaying
bacteria, and discouraged the curiosity of animal life, the road is remarkably
well-preserved. Examination of its remains has provided extensive
information about the people who constructed it.

Summary Statement:

S.T. is old, well preserved road; tells much about

people who made it.
