Laura: Hi, Mrs. Wilson. Can you please help me choose a book? I have to write a book review by tomorrow
morning.
Wilson: Oh, dear. By tomorrow?
Laura: Yes, I know. I always leave things till the last minute and I’ve waited too long with this book review,
too. But I’ll read the book this evening. I read very quickly, so it’ll be OK.
Wilson: Fine, Laura. So, have you ever read anything by George Orwell? His books are extraordinary. You can’t
put them down.
Laura: Um, I don’t think so. Which books has Orwell written?
Wilson: Well, he’s not alive any more, but he wrote Animal Farm and 1984.
Laura: Oh, I’ve heard of those books, but I haven’t read them yet. Aren’t they very serious and complicated?
I’d prefer an amusing novel, Mrs. Wilson – not too long, just something short and fun to read in an
evening.
Wilson: Let me think. I haven’t read any funny books lately. I prefer reading about real people and real
problems in our society.
Laura: Oh. Actually, I also like imaginative books – you know – science fiction and fantasy, but they’re usually
very long books and I haven’t got much time to read …
Wilson: Then how about this? Look. This is a book of short stories by Isaac Asimov. I’m sure you’ll like it. It’s
original and amusing, but it’s not only amusing. It also includes serious opinions about the world. I
really recommend it.
Laura: Yes, that sounds good. I’ll take it. Thanks, Mrs. Wilson. You’ve really helped me.
