READING CHECK
Mr and Mrs Cole have a dinner party. Emma goes to it and sits
next to Frank Churchill. Emma learns that Jane has a new piano.
Mrs Weston thinks Mr Knightley is in love with Jane. Emma and
Frank sing some songs together. Then Jane sings and plays some
songs. Mr Knightley listens to her happily, but he doesn’t want
her to sing too long and become ill. After that Emma and Frank
Churchill dance together.
The next day Emma goes shopping with Harriet in Highbury. They
meet Mrs Weston and Frank there. Together they all go to Miss
Bates’ house to hear Jane play some more music. Mr Knightley
rides past on a horse but he doesn’t want to come in.

Cathy and Heathcliff
They come from the book ‘Wuthering Heights’ by Emily Brontë.
Their story takes place in Yorkshire in England. They meet when
Heathcliff, a gypsy, goes to live with the Earnshaw family as a
child. Cathy falls in love with him, and Heathcliff seems to love
her. Later in the story we learn that Heathcliff hates the
Earnshaws and wants revenge for the bad way they treated him.
In the end Cathy dies.

Beatrice and Benedick
They come from the play ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ by
Shakespeare. Their story takes place in Tuscany in Italy.
They meet when Claudio, a friend of Benedick, comes to visit
Hero, Beatrice’s cousin. Both enjoy talking a lot, say they will
never fall in love, and both seem to hate each other. Later in the
story their ideas change and they are nicer to each other. In the
end, helped by their friends, they fall in love with each other.

Pinkerton and Madame Butterfly
They come from the opera ‘Madame Butterfly’ by Puccini. Their
story takes place in Japan. They meet when Pinkerton, an
American, comes to Japan for work and falls in love with
Madame Butterfly. Later in the story Pinkerton leaves Madame
Butterfly in Japan with their son. Years later he returns and
Madame Butterfly discovers that he has a wife in America. In the
end, full of sadness, Madame Butterfly kills herself.
