Question III: Read the passage and choose the best answers to questions below.
(10 pts)
Social parasitism involves one species relying on another to raise its young. Among
vertebrates, the best known social parasites are such birds as cuckoos and cowbirds; the female
lays egg in a nest belonging to another species and leaves it for the host to rear.

The dulotic species of ants, however, are the supreme social parasites. Consider, for
example, the unusual behavior of ants belonging to the genus Polyergus. All species of this ant
have lost the ability to care for themselves. The workers do not forage for food, feed their brood
or queen, or even clean their own nest. To compensate for these deficits, Polyergus has become
specialized at obtaining workers from the related genus Formica to do these chores.
In a raid, several thousand Polyergus workers will travel up to 500 feet in search of a
Formica nest, penetrate it, drive off the queen and her workers, capture the pupal brood, and
transport it back to their nest. The captured brood is then reared by the resident Formica workers
until the developing pupae emerge to add to the Formica population, which maintains the
mixed-species nest. The Formica workers forage for food and give it to colony members of both
species. They also remove wastes and excavate new chambers as the population increases.
The true extent of the Polyergus ants’ dependence on the Formica becomes apparent when
the worker population grows too large for existing nest. Formica scouts locate a new nesting
site, return to the mixed- species colony, and recruit additional Formica nest mates. During a
period that may last seven days, the Formica workers carry to the new nest all the Polyergus
eggs, larvae, and pupae, every Polyergus adult, and even the Polyergus queen.
Of the approximately 8,000 species of ants in the world, all 5 species of Polyergus and
some 200 species in other geneva have evolved some degree of parasitic relationship with other
ants.
71. Which of the following statements best represents the main idea of the passage?
A. Ants belonging to the genus Formica are incapable of performing certain tasks.
B. The genus Polyergus is quite similar to the genus Formica.

A. species

75. What does the author mean by stating that “Thu dulotic species of ants … are the supreme
social parasites” in line 4?
A. The Polyergus are more highly developed than the Formica.

unusual not to use one. In many countries, mobile phones are very popular with young people.
They find that the phones are more than a means of communication - having a mobile phone
shows that they are cool and connected. The explosion in mobile phone use around the world
has made some health professionals worried. Some doctors are concerned that in the future
many people may suffer health problems from the use of mobile phones. In England, there has
been a serious debate about this issue. Mobile phone companies are worried about the negative
publicity of such ideas. They say that there is no proof that mobile phones are bad for your
health. On the other hand, medical studies have shown changes in the brain cells of some people
who use mobile phones. Signs of changes in the tissues of the brain and head can be detected
with modern scanning equipment. In one case, a traveling businessman had to retire at young
age because of serious memory loss. He could not remember even simple tasks. He would often
forget the name of his own son. This man used to talk on his mobile phone for about six hours a
day, everyday of his working week, for a couple of years. His family doctor blamed his mobile

phone use but his employer's doctor did not agree.
What is it that makes mobile phones potentially harmful? The answer is radiation. Hightech machines can detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone
companies agree that there is some radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry
about. As the discussion about their safety continues, it appears that it's best to use mobile
phones less often. Use your regular phone if you want to talk for a long time. Use your mobile
phone only when you really need it. Mobile phones can be very useful and convenient,
especially in emergencies. In the future, mobile phones may have a warning label that says they
are bad for your health. So for now, it's wise not to use your mobile phone so often.

Who were the people responsible for collection and sending plants from one country to another?
And why did they do it? Initially they were travellers with other purposes: traders, colonists,
pilgrims and missionaries have all been important in providing new plants for English gardens.
They sent back indigenous wild plants, or sometimes, as in the cases of visitors to China and
Japan, plants which have been cultivated and improved for hundreds of years. This worked, of
course, in both directions: English gardens were making in the most unlikely places. Travellers
did not always recognise an interesting plant on seen it – interesting, that is, to the collector at
home. So in the 16th and 17th century, attempts were made to collect on a most professional
basis, either by patrons sending collections into the field, or by subscriptions to finance local
enthusiasts in the most promised areas. By 1611 John Tradescant was travelling and collecting
in France and other parts of Europe. Lately, Peter Collinson, a London merchant, who had seen
the richness of the plant material sending back by Tradescant, organised a syndicate to finance
the amateur botanist John Bartram. Before long, special collectors were being dispatched to all
parts of the world by institutions such as the Chelsea Physic Garden.

SECTION III: READING

Bees, classified into over 10,000 species, are insects found in almost every part of the world except
the northernmost and southernmost regions. One commonly known species is the honeybee, the only

18

18

bee that produces honey and wax. Humans use the wax in making candles, lipsticks, and other products,
and they use the honey as a substance that people eat to maintain life and growth. While gathering the
nectar and pollen with which they make honey, bees are concurrently helping to fertilize the flowers on
which they land. Many fruits and vegetables would not survive if bees did not carry the pollen from
blossom to blossom.
Bees live in a structured environment and social structure within a hive, which is a nest with
storage space for the honey. The different types of bees each perform a distinct function. The worker
bee carries nectar to hive in a special stomach called a honey stomach. Other workers make beewax and
shape it into a honeycomb, which is a waterproof mass of six-sided compartments, or cells. The queen
lays eggs in completed cells. As the workers build more cells, the queen lays more eggs.
All workers, like the queen, are female, but the workers are smaller than the queen. The male
honeybees are called drones; they do no work and can not sting. They are developed from unfertilized
eggs, and their only job is to impregnate a queen. The queen must be fertilized in order to lay more
worker eggs. During the season when less honey is available and the drone is of no further use, the
workers block the drones from eating the honey so that they will starve to death.

NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN!

Education is a life-long process that not only provides us with basic skills such as literacy and
numeracy, but is also essential in
(71)
our future lives. From the moment we enter
kindergartens as small children, and as we progress through primary and secondary education, we
(72)
the foundations for the life ahead of us. We must discipline ourselves to work hard
(73)
we can pass exams and gain the qualifications we will need to secure a good job. We must also acquire
valuable life skills so that we can fit in and work with those around us. And of course health education
helps us to understand
(74)
we can stay fit and healthy.
For most people, this process ends when they are in their mid-to-late teens. For others, however, it is the
beginning of a lifetime of learning. After they finish school, many
(75)
to further education
where they will learn more useful skills such as computer literacy or basic business management.
(76)
will enroll on a program of higher education at a university where, with hard work, they will
have the opportunity to graduate after three or four years with a well-earned degree. After that, they
may work for a while before opting to study for a higher degree- an MA, for example, or a PhD.
Alternatively, they may choose to attend an evening class after work or, if they have a sympathetic
employer,
(77)
day release so that they can study during the week. And if they live a long
way from a college or university, they might follow a
(79)
course using mail and the Internet.
(78)

, it is largely due to the proliferation of computers that many people have started to study again
and can proudly class themselves as mature students.
We live in a fascinating and constantly changing world, and we must continually learn and
(80)
new knowledge if we are to adapt and keep up with changing events. Our schooldays are just the
beginning of this process, and we should make the best of every opportunity to develop ourselves,
whether we are eighteen or eighty. You are, indeed, never too old to learn.
