Item A
Many indigenous peoples live in areas that are particularly affected by climate change and
global warming. Indigenous peoples’ greater reliance on the natural world for their way of life
means that they are also likely to feel the effects of any changes.
The Marshall Islands, a group of low-lying islands in the Pacific Ocean, are an example of
an area likely to be affected by global warming. The highest point on the islands is less than
10 metres above sea level and most of the inhabitants live within 30 metres of the shore.
Anthropologists are interested in understanding how environmental damage and climate change
are affecting indigenous peoples.
