III. The tenses do not change in Reported Speech when:
1. The reporting verbs (said, told, etc) is in the Present, Future or Present perfect tense.
- Peter says, ‘I’m tired.”  Peter says that he is tired.
- “The station is far from here,” he says.He says the station is far from here.
2. The speaker expresses general truths, permanent states and conditions.
- The teacher said, “The earth moves round the Sun.”  The teacher said that the Earth moves round the Sun.
3. The Direct speech includes these following modals: “could, would, should, might, ought to, used to, had
better.”
- Tom said, “You shouldn’t contact her.  Tom said that I shouldn’t contact her.
+ “Must” can be either remained the same or changed into “had to”
4. If the reported sentence deals with unreal past, conditionals type 2/type 3 or wishes, the tenses remain the
same.
- “It’s time we went,” he said. He said it was time they went.
- “If I were you, I would apologize,” he said. He said that if he were me, he would apologize.
