During the 1800s, a number of Americans organized local celebrations to honor
mothers. However, it took a long time to gain support for a national celebration. The
person who was responsible for doing this was Anna Jorvis. She began here effort in the
early 1900s. She wrote thousands of letters to congressmen, city officials, teachers and
