Using Leveled Word Cards for English Language Developm
These flexible suggestions will allow you to
match activities to each child’s level.
• Hold up a card as you introduce that
vocabulary word, pointing out the pictures
and letters as you sound out the words.
• Pull out the cards for one week and provide
them in a center where children may access
them as needed to practice and review
lesson vocabulary.
• Encourage production of oral language.
Read the contextual sentence to a small
group. Then, have children discuss the ideas
raised by the sentence. To start discussion
ask, What does this make you think of?
• Have pairs take turns using them as flash
cards to review vocabulary words from
previous weeks up to the current week.
• Encourage children to make word
connections by: (1) putting word cards into
categories that you suggest, (2) naming a
category for a group of word cards, (3)
picking cards from a pile and making up
sentences using one or more of the words.
• Use the cards any time for one-on-one
assessment of word recognition and
pronunciation, as well as vocabulary
comprehension. Read or show the definition
then ask for the word, and vice versa.
