Much &
many
By:
Meriem Ncir

We use MANY with:
Count nouns, in
questions and
negatives
How many eggs are
there?
There aren’t many.
How many oranges are
there in the bowl?
There aren’t many
oranges in the bowl.

We use MUCH with:
noncount nouns, in
questions and
negatives
How much honey is there
in the honey-bee jar?
There isn’t much.
How much shampoo is
there in the bottle?
There isn’t much.

REMEMBER:
There isn’t much bread.
(=There’s some.)

There isn’t any bread.
(= There’s none; no bread; zero)

Now, in pairs, ask and answer
sentences using MUCH and MANY.
Ex: # How much bread is there in
the fridge?
There isn’t much.
# How many tomatoes are there
in the bowl?
There aren’t many.

ATTENTION !!!
When we are not sure whether or not we
still have some of the things we are
asking about, we say:
• Are there any cookies in the cookie jar?

• Is there any ice cream?

But if we think we still have some of the
thing we are asking about, we say:
• How much milk is there?
• How many apples are there?
